COLONEL MOSBY DYING. ee
The Notorions Guerrilla Who oa. ‘
~~ Prominent During the Civit War.
Colone] John S. Mosby, the
ex-Confederate cavalry officer, is lying
at the point of death in San Francisco.
His iliness is due to appendicitis, contracted two weeks ‘ago, and his /advanced age renders recovery practically impossible. Colonel. Mosby is in
his 63d year. He was one of the prominent military leaders of. the Confederacy. He gained much. experience
while serving under General Joseph
E. Johnston in his Shenandoah cam:
paign.He participated in. the battles
é6f Manassas and Bull Run. In Feb: ruary, 1862, he was made Adjutant ‘of
his regiment, the First Virginia Cavalry. He gained fame by his taiding . .
éxpeditions along the Rappahannock
in ‘Northern Virginia. © His. band: of
was the terror of the Northern soldiers. Colonel ‘Mosby was
the last of the Confederate. officers +0
surrender. Secretary of War Stanton
excluded him fromthe general pardon
and:sent out scouts to take him into
custody. The brave leader of the guerillas was sentenced to be ‘hanged ‘as a
rebel. The order was .subsequently
countermanded, General Gtant issuing
a special proclamation including Col6nel’ Mosby among the Southerners
gaining the benefit of the terms of the
surrender of General Lee. The Colonel
has no living relatives, and the watchers by his bedside are two warm
’ friends. ‘In his delirium he: lives over
ggain the stirring scenes of battle and
fancies himself at the head of his
trusty band of guerrillas. Every few
moments he will raise his hand and
shout: “Onward, boys, to the charge ad
At other times he would cry out::
“Qnce more for the glorious. Confederacy!” followed by “God bless the
Stars and Stripes, boys.” His lucid
intervals during the past sake gered
hours have been rare.
