Colone] John S. Mosby, the ex-Confederate cavalry officer, is lying at the point of death in San Francisco. His iliness is due to appendicitis, contracted two weeks ‘ago, and his /advanced age renders recovery practically impossible. Colonel. Mosby is in his 63d year. He was one of the prominent military leaders of. the Confederacy. He gained much. experience while serving under General Joseph E. Johnston in his Shenandoah cam: paign.He participated in. the battles é6f Manassas and Bull Run. In Feb: ruary, 1862, he was made Adjutant ‘of his regiment, the First Virginia Cavalry. He gained fame by his taiding . . éxpeditions along the Rappahannock in ‘Northern Virginia. © His. band: of was the terror of the Northern soldiers. Colonel ‘Mosby was the last of the Confederate. officers +0 surrender. Secretary of War Stanton excluded him fromthe general pardon and:sent out scouts to take him into custody. The brave leader of the guerillas was sentenced to be ‘hanged ‘as a rebel. The order was .subsequently countermanded, General Gtant issuing a special proclamation including Col6nel’ Mosby among the Southerners gaining the benefit of the terms of the surrender of General Lee. The Colonel has no living relatives, and the watchers by his bedside are two warm ’ friends. ‘In his delirium he: lives over ggain the stirring scenes of battle and fancies himself at the head of his trusty band of guerrillas. Every few moments he will raise his hand and shout: “Onward, boys, to the charge ad At other times he would cry out:: “Qnce more for the glorious. Confederacy!” followed by “God bless the Stars and Stripes, boys.” His lucid intervals during the past sake gered hours have been rare. To improve Glenbrook. Tidings:, George Fletcher, George Mainhart and Dr. W. C. Jones, a committee of gentlemen interested in repairing and improving Glenbrook Park, have been circulating a document in Grass Valley today, asking for subscriptions to the capital stock.of a riew company which it is proposed to organize. The property is‘ offered for sale. at a low price, and the: new incorporation will buy it and keep the groutids in good condition. Races and other sports will be held there. Nevada City ‘has already subscribed for 300 shares of the stock at $50 per share. If Grass Valley will do as well, the movement will be a success. Sims, will preach Sunday morning and in the evening deliver a Memorial address.
