An important strike was made at the Federal Loan mine late yesterday.afternoon. The last blast put off in the main drift. on the 800 level uncovered-.one corner of a ledge of fine-looking quartz. Samples from the ledge.were brought to town and caused the stockholders of the mine to feel highly elated. The quartz is filled with rich sulphurets and in some pieces free gold can be seen. It is not-known yet how wide the ledge is, but from indications it is . supposed to be of good size, The ledge that has been worked so long was lost two or three weeks ago, since which time the mill has been idle for want of quartz to crush. The finding of another shoot of good ore is not. only gratifying to the owners but to everybody else, as it ensures continued employment to the miners and other men hired by the company, It is to be hoped that the strike made yesterday will prove to be extensive and tkat the ore will maintain its present richness, if not increase in value as work progresses, Lodge Entertainment. —_— The Legion of Honor had‘ an entertainment last night, in conjunction with the regular meeting. Henry Phillips,of San Francisco, who is operating a mine near Washington and has three others bonded for his company, came down from Washington yesterday. Today he returned there, accompanied by W. W. Haskell and George Berliner, of San Francisco, who arrived here last evening. They are interested in the» mining ventures that Mr. Phillips is conducting. JamessH. Hall and J. O’Rourke, of San Francisco, went to Washington several days ago and are still there. They, too, are interested with Mr. Phillips. Thecoming summer will see more activity in quartz mining in the vicinity of Washington than has prevailed there in many years, Outside capitalists are coming in and taking hold of new properties or of mines that have not been. worked for some time, and from the preseut outlook we expect to hear of important developments’ being made there within the next six or eight months. Fred Bradley arrived here fre San Francisco’ last evening, accompanied by ©. R. Corning of that city. This morning they ieft for Washington, and from there will go to the Spanish mine, upon which Mr. Bradley -intends resuming operations, A new mill and other machinery will be put in and other improvements made. that will facilitate the work, Nothing has-been done at this mine for some time. Under Mr. Bradley ’s management several years ago the Spanish paid well, although the quartz is of very low grade. ‘The new inill will be some distance from the old one, and the mine is to be worked at a different place.
