Simple Assault.
The jury in the case of the Peéople against H.D. Brown of Grass
Valley, charged with committing
a deadly assault upon Ed. A.
Roterts by striking him on the
head with a whisky: glass, were
given the case late Monday. evening, and about half an hour later
returned a verdict of simple assauit. Judgment will be pronounced at two o’clock Saturday
afterneon.

The Virginia City Chronicle of
Monday evening says: Jerry’ Mcbacker of
James Siattery; put wp $100 forfeitthis afternoon with Captain Dick
Hennesy at the U. 8. saloon, in accordance with the offer made in
the letter from James Rodda’ of
Nevada City, accepting the. ehallenge to fight a hard-glove match
with Slattery for $250 a side to a
finish, instead of $100, the sum
named in the latter’s challenge.
W. Skewes, Rodda’s backer; announced that he had raised only
$60, but would try and. ‘‘dig up”’
$40 more by to-morrow.
McCarthy said that Rodda had
$250 a side; that Slattery’s money
was ready,'and if they wanted to

The City Loses.
Justice Sowden yesterday made
a decision sustaining defendant’s
demurrer in the case of the. city
against Casper Cohn, the Commercial street merchant recently arrested for refusing to take out a
city: license. .The demurrer wus
based on the ground that the ordinance under which the arrest
was madeis unconstitutional and
void; that it is in conflict with
section 6, sub-division 9 of the
city charter which provides that
the amount of the license must be
based on the extent of the business done, whereasthe ordinance
calls for $20.a year regardless of the
amount of goods sold. Seventyfive authorities on the subject
were cited by the lawyers and the
Judge has had his time. pretty
well employed since last Thursday
in examining into the pros and
cons of thelaw. E. H. Gaylord
appeared as counsel for the city
and P, F. Simonds for the defendant.

by him in thaticapacity. The anti-Chinese movement is progressing so conducted as to receive the

State Convention of the Ancient
Order of Hibernians, to. be held . ?
at this city beginning June 8th,
are getting along finely, and the
members of the local division propose to make the oceasion one that
will long be remembered with
pleasure by both citizens and_ visitors. There are ‘in the State
about thirty divisions, and each
‘. division is entitled to send five
members. T. H. Carr, State Secretary.of the Order, has. secured
from the railroad companies special rates—about two-thirds those
regularly charged—so that, for instance, the price of tickets from
San-Francisco to this city and _ return will be not more than $10.
Committees on tfeception, banquet, musical and literary enterds of Cap-/#inments, ete:, have been appointed and are at work arranging-the many preliminaries essential to the success of the convention. ‘The Nevada City division will hold another meeting
