PAINE'S CELERY COMPOUND — d Thousands of Physicians, Men and Wons g the Baseball, Horse Racing day for the sports at Glenbrook Park, Sacred Music. HAT THE SPIRITUAL INFLUENCE of sacred “music is a potent factor in striking overwhelming conviction of sin to the hearts of evil-doers is beyond question, and this faci is freely admitted by pastors of the various. religious denominations who state that the inspiring song service in the churches have done as much if not more toward convicting sinners and leading them into the right path in search of divine truth than the eloquent oratoryiand convincing sermons from the pulpits. It was not a very long since we heard a minister in one of our local churches make the following statement: “I. believe the inspiring spiritual power in sacred song has been as equally effectual in the conviction and conversion of sinners as the best sermon ever discoursed; and I sincerely believe that there ate many redeemed souls in heaven who have been saved by the power and throngh the divine instrumentality of music.” That the best and talented singers can accomplish a great amount of good in this line is also true, How often it is that great‘dudiences have been moved to tears by some sweet-vgiced and talented singer who has chosen to sing some sehtimental 67 religious selection! An affecting incident which illustrates the wonderful power and moral’ influence that sacred song exerts on the conscien :es of wrong doers, occurred at San Francisco this week in’a Police Court. When thirty more or less bedraggled men lined up before Judge Fritz one morning after anight in the tanks as punishment, and the usual horrid daily: tale of tisety aiid depravity was unfolded, from a cell near by there came floating the-strains of “The Holy City,” suiigi a fine barytoné.~ Frank Alfred, once known professionally as Alfieri; a member of the Grau Opera Company and-awaiting trial for forgery, was singing. Judge Fritz stopped amazed to listen, while the men in line turned as one man to hear:the music. Two or three men fell to their knees and began to pray, and none listened without some show of emotion. The man sang with all his heart in his voice and the wonderful music lifted and pealed through the corridors of the jail. ae : “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, lift up thy gates and sing.” The“tones were jublilant, appealing. One old man prayed audibly, while one younger and better looking wiped his eyes furtively and edged toward the desk behind which Judge Fritz was standing. A lad scarcely 20 leaned suddenly against the wall and buried his head in his folded arms, sobbing. deeply; those great strangling sobs which come right from the very heart of men and tear and rend as no knife ever tore. “Oh, mother, mother, come back to me,” he cried.; _ “Hfosannah in the highest, hosannah to your King,” rang the full toned voice. =" cap’t stand this, suddenly shouted the wreck of what had once been a man. “Judge, we were brought here to be punished, not for this. It’s brutal to make us suffer in this way.” . “Shut-up —— you,” cried a lad, “let us hear it. It’s heaven to me and it’s saved me, for I'll never drink another drop’as long as I live.” “Hosannah 1m the highest, hosannah forever more.” The great voice rose higher and higher in its ecstacy of melody, and then stopped.as suddenly as it had begun. Sergeant Bidwell and the prison keepers tried in vain to get the men into line once more, but they were quite beyond police control for the time being. Judge Fritz told the po= lice to give the men time. Before order could be restored, however; another voice rose iu song. This time the notes were in ‘tenor and the song, while of a religious nature, was of a more popuiar order. McFadden, the young brute who was recently arrested for the wanton murder of an old man that he might rob him of the little money he owned, was singing, ‘Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven.” His, voice, rang true and pure and he sang with deep feeling andcommonplace words.of the song. This, too, moved manydeeply, but created nothing like the wonderful impression of Alfred’s singing of ‘““The Holy City.” Is it necessary to add that Judge Fritz dismissed every man in the line without a word of reprimand? Was Lucky. In making change at the National Hotel the other day, Merritt Rector took in a 60 cent piece dated 1818. The theater goers of this clty will have.a rare treat next Wednesday evening when the Sierras Oomedy Company will make its bow before what promises to bea full house, The bill will be “A Night Off” and all who attend should prepare for a hearty laugh. The comedy, which is one of Augustin Daily’s best, was played to crowded houses for over a hundred successive nights in New York City, which alone is recommendation enough for it as a piece that will please. The company, which is composed of some of the very best talent of the county, has rebearsed the piece most faithfully aad each member has their part now entirely under control. It is not rash to say the entertainment will rank most favorably with the best of the high priced attractions which are presented here and will be far superior to the average of them. The comedy offers several places for specialties of high order and the company is guite equal to the occasion. There are several large bydrants areuod the foundry which afford a good protection against fire. The firemen had scarcely returned their hose wagons to their respective bouses when a second alarm was turned in from Nevada No, 1 for a small fire in the store of J. B. Rosenthal. A few papers behind the couster were accidentally set en fire, but the blaze was extinguished with a sprinkling pot of water.
