Dewey's Report Delayed. WASHINGTON, May 4.—Secretary Long has left the Navy Department for the day. He states that Dewey’s delay is due to the fact that McCniloch arrived tonight and is anchored forty miles from Hong Kong, which port must be reached by small boats. Students as Artille:ymen. Lonpon, May 4.—At noon the Hongkong and Manila cable was still severed. The report of the surrender of Manila is probably true, but it is only conjecture. Manila merchants here agree that the Islands are jn a condition of revolution, and they' would be pleased to see the trouble ended. They say the situation is perhaps as bad as in Cuba. Sampson’s Fleet Sails. Key West, May 4.—Tbe harbor is empty, Rear-Admiral Sampson’s fleet CAPTAIN SAMPSON, bas sailed, and it is expected the next important news will be of another great battle like that of Manila. In the meantime no important developments are anticipated.~= Coming After Us. Lisson, May 4—The Spanish Cape Verde squadron has returned to join the Spanish fleet near Cadiz, and they will shortly start for American waters. Volunteers Not Going, WASHINGTON, May 4.—No volunteers will be sent to Cuba except Roosevelt’s ASSISTANT SECRETARY ROOSEVELT, a Cowboys, Cuban troops and the Yellow Fever Brigade. Will Back Up Dewey. New York, May 4—The World’s Hongkong correspondent says Chief Aguinaldo of the Phillipine insurgent forces has arrived and conferred with Consul Wildman. He will submit to Dewey’s orders and back up with the so-called insurgents, numbering 30,000, the naval forces of Dewey when thelatter gains control, He promises to conduct a humane campaign. Killea by an Electric Wire, Clifford Dillingham, a horseshoer at this city, last evening received a telegram stating that hisbrother George, who was an electrician at Elkhart, Indiana, had just been killed by coming in contact with a live electric wire, THE MYSTERIOUS SLATES. The present. indications are that the assessment roll of the county as «a whole will show a marked increase over last year’s total. There are beavy gains. in Grass Valley township, and in Nevada township there is an encouraging increase in spite of the fact that the. transfer of the water works from Mrs, Huntington to the city cuts off $16,000 worth of property to be taxed. Regardless of this there will bea net. gain of Rough and Ready suffers most of any of the towziships as compared with last year, This is due to the shutting down of the copper mine, the falling off in the amount of live stock on hand and the sending from the township of some money heretofore taxed there. .
