SRS Ais ’. ability to.train up the little ones in the “The Doings of Our Neighbors as Tol THE TRANSCRIPT. Issued Every Evening, Sundays Bxcepted, AT NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, BROWN & CALEING. ie " “EBRMS OF SUBSORITTION ¢ By Mail, , $6 Per Year By Carrier, 12 1-2c Per Week Delivered toany part of the city. TELEPHONE NO. 41. P. 0, BOX E. SATURDAY. ....-+May 5, 1900 Editorial Notes. Mr. Croker is coming home to make his November collections. The free trade New York tariff reform club, aided by foreign money, and Serving-only foreign ‘interests, is opposing the pending shipping bill. The friends of the Wilson tariff are the opponents of the pending ship ping bill; the advocates of the shipping bill were the op, onents of the Wilson tariff. Ex-Governor James E. Campbell bar been pleading for a divotce for Democracy and Populism. His grounds aré logical, but the tribunal to which he eppeals is prejudiced. Those who are opposed to the United States acquiring any more territory seem to be under the impression tha' Columbia has had all the children she can take care of, and has lost her way they should go. The government provided for Portc Rico is far more liberal than tbat giver to Louisiana when that State was admitted to the Union. A little experi ence will assure the Porto Ricans o! the character of Republican in‘en tions. But the Democrats will still be dissatisfied. Colonel Watterson continues to explain his explanations of why he pro poses to support'a platform this year that made him desert his party in 1896. Jt will recalled be in 1896 the Colonel conducted under a “No Compromise With Dishonor” banner. His various explanations go to show that. the Colonel has not compromised. His connection with Goeblism has caused him to execute an unqualified surrender. Is it not about time for the Democra'i party to cell upon the country to pu them in power, so that they may reduce the dangerous surplus in the United States Treasury? That is one of. the few promises made by it that was faithfully fulfilled, and, in doing so, it also reduced the surplus of al most every citizenin the Union. As ¢ surplus reducer and a deficit creator that party has a record that can not be successfully assailed. GRASS VALLEY NEWS. Over the Telephone.
