Sheree, Beckley; sacrifice hits, oak Nevades Win th Basel Ball By a Score Of 12 to 3, Yesterday was an ideal one for Sports, and Glenbrook Park was thronged with a good-natured and enthusiastic crowd. From the 12 o’slock Car up to the 8 o’clock oar, they were literally packed with pleasure seekers, even banging along the outside, Enthusiaem was in the air'and the crowd of rooters had provided themselves with fish horns to spur their respective nines on to victory. The cars were so loaded that two conductors were provided foreach and there was . 20 confasion whatever. The first part of the game was grand, up to the third] ioning the score standing 1to 0 in favor of Grass Valley, but then the tide began to turn and the Nevada boys swat'ed the ball-all over the fleld and wrested the palm of victory from Grats Valley. The nines are pretty evenly matched and the succeeding games will be a struggle for your life, and every little point will be taken advantage of by the contestants. The Grass Valley nine is made up of five local men and four imported players, while Nevada played hers straight up. Taking‘all parts of the game together it was one of the prettiest contests that hae taken place in the county in many gears. The Grass Valley boys took their defeat good naturedly and promise that they will tarn the tables in the bext game. Que of the great attractions of the day was an improvised band with Chinese instruments, and they plsyed some rare airs that would j.r the ears of the natives. The horse and foot racing proved spirited, es. pecially the foot race in which Dan Stewart was the winner. The gate. receipts amounted to over $800, which will give the players about $10 apiece. It was probably tne largest crowd that ever witnessed a ball game in this county that saw the Nevadas of this city d-feat Grass Valley by a score of 12.to 8. The home team outplayed Grass Valley at every point of the game, in flelding, batting and base tuoning, in fact, Grass Valley’s infleld was as full of ho’es as a sieve, and one of the new men, Ross, showed up very weak. The home team hammered Stewart unmercifally, and with the poor support he received, he was forced to retire in the seventh inning in favor of Overmyer, who was batted for three hits netting four runs io the two innings he pitched. Morrow for Grass Valley caught a good game and that is all that can be said of their playing. The Nevades played, good, snappy ball, and Ballestero pitched a masterly game and kept the five hits off him well scattered, while the Nevadas batted Stewart hard when hits were needed, and assisted by Grass Valley’s errors, left no doubt as to the result after the third inning. The two double plays made by the Nevadas were neatly executed, particularly the one in the ninth, when Beckley stopped a liner from Ross’ bat and assisted by Noack and O'Connor doubled both Ross and Whitbure in true professional style. The features of the game were the pitching of Ballestero, the playing of Spargo in left field, and a grand stand catch by Beckley of a fly from Ross’ bat in the fourth inning, for which he ran over into right fleld, and jast managed to catch the ball and hold it as he fell to the ground. It looked as though Ross would surely be credited with a bit, but‘our old friend “Beck” was “there witb the goods,” and he was applauded long and load for bis play, e&peciaily by the Chinese band, who, by the way, created quite a sensation The Oarly Bears big horn with the word Nevadas paiotei on it was among the inetraments: ‘Bal’s” support was exceptionally gcod, but one costly error being‘made. The playing of Olare O'Connor on first for the Nevadas was ales one of the features of the game, especially bis handling of low thrown balls. Manager Leiter in the short time he hes bandied the local team has gained the respect and confidence of all the players{“and the saccess of yesterday’s game was due as much to his efforts as to those of anyone else, The eppended score shows the game ip detail: Nevabas.
