character of the -performance given by
The Gaiety Girls Company is such as to attract the attention of all the widowers and
bachelors in the town. Dancing in tights,
high kicking, posing as venuses with shapely
limbs and graceful forms always succeed in
attracting a large number of bald-headed,
nearsighted, teethless old fogies. They will
be ther to-night en masse, and the gallery
will watch them with intense interest,

The number and character of the entertainments announced for this week clearly
proves that our people are still susceptible
to wit and humor, m:-rth and amusement, and
that they appreciate the efforts made for
their mental and humorous delectation, It
speaks much for a town of this size when
its people will patronize such a diversity of
pleasures as those provided for ths week.
And we are’certain that each particular entertainment will have its quota of support.
In this respect Nevada City is not retrogressing.
The charitable act performed by Constable
Dillon when he gave a poor wayfarer the
Jast quarter he had in the world has brought
him more notoriety than he anticipated or
even desired. It was freely mentioned in
the press, and his friends in this city,
are legion, have since contracted the habit
who
of ‘‘striking” him for a quarter whenever
they meet him on the street. Dick says
that in the future when he

left hand know what the right hand doeth.
That is true charity.

The San Francisco Report in a recent
issue published a dispatch stating that Secretary of State Gresham is seriously ill. In
connection with the telegram there was
published a cut which is supposed to represent the Secretary, but which in reality
represents a inan on the verge of the grave.
It is similar to the ‘‘before’’ and ‘‘after”
class of cuts used by advertisers of patent
medicines, with a strong leaning to the
“before” species. If it is a true portrayal
of Secretary Gresham as he looks today, he
must be a decidedly sick man and there can
be little hope of his recovery. Let us hope
that it is not a correct portrait.

number of intelligent people at each session
will encourage the teachers and show that
their efforts are appreciated by parents and
others who are interested in educational
work. Absence on the part of the people
might have an opposite effect. Besides,
there is much said at these gatherings that
will sharpen the intellect and expand the
mind, Subjects are discussed by competent
authorities in a manner that will enlighten
the mind and add to our store of knowledge,

Mrs. Howard was the daughter of Wm.
Cole, formerly of this city, and was well
known through Nevada and Sierra counties,
especially the latter, she having spent many
years of her life at the Mountain House.
Her age was about 23 years. She was
possessed of a loving and amiable disposition
and her friendship was cherished by all
who knew her. Her sudden death will be
a severe shock to her large circle of friends
and acquaintances, Her sister, Mrs, Fred
Bress, of the Mountain House is on her
