Well Considered —
Contest,
The voters of this city after careful
deliberation, yesterday decided who
should serve on the City Board of
Trustees for the next. two years, They
also selected a Marshal, Assessor and
Treasurer. Tho day was quiet and
orderly'and go little was the stir on
the streets that you could scarcely believe that’ an election was going on.
From the cloge vote on the Trustees
there was evidently some deep thinking as to who should constitute the
Personnel of the Board, The total vote
cast was 617, which was not up tothe
average. A total of 650 votes was cast
at one City election, but the average
has been about 600. Out of the seven
candidates for Trustee the successful
ones were Alex Gault, Dr. 0. W. Chapman and Sidney Peard. For the ottice
of Marshal there were but two contestants, Hi Shearer, the incumbent, and
Ed Tompkins. Shearer was selected,
For Assessor and Treasurer, there was
no Opposition, and the present incumbente, Lewis and Morgan, were again
selected.
Alex Gault, who has again been selected as a member of the Board, needs
no introduction, He is one of the old
est and most respected citizens of Nevada City, and is at present the President of the Board. He has been a
member of the Board for several years
and has devoted his attention to the
welfare o the city, for which the voters
showed their appreciation by according him the highest vote on the ticket,
827.
Dr. C. W. Chapman, who was also
elected, will be the new member of the
Board. He is one of the solid young
men of the city, and is always ready to
pattend to business at a moment’s notice, and will prove a useful member
of the Board. He was urged by his
many friends to run for the office, they
knowing that be would be the right
man in the right place.
Sidney Peaid, was the third member elected, showing that the people
appreciated his efforts as a member of
the present Board. He has algo served
as Clerk of the Board for almost two
years, and has been a painstaking,
careful official and has always been
ready to stand up for what he econsidered was right and condemn that
which he thought was wrong. The
voters did well te re-elect him.
Hi Shearer, who was re-elected as
Marshal, has filled the office for about
a@ year, and has attended strictly to
the duties cf the position. He has
been on the-streets early and late, and
has seen to it that there has been no
breach of the city’s laws when it has
laid in his power to punish the offender. As Superintendent of Streets
he has seen that the work has been
properly done.
Ed Morgan for Treasurer sad Thos,
Lewis were re-elected, having filled
their respective offices to the entire
satisfaction of the people.
Below will be found the result of the
election as given by precincts.

{The Gat Spring: Health. Gir
Makes Sick Poople Well,
A Prominent Clergyman Tells How
He Escaped From His
Deadly Perils.
When spring comes with its gentle
showers, its balmy air, ita bright sunshine and bursting buds, it too often
brings to our homes seenes of suffering and physical decay.
The seeds of disease which. were imperceptibly germinating during the
winter months, have developed and
planted in the system dangers that
now call for our instant care and attention. Neglect and procrastination:
will only deepen existing perils and
lead to death.
Before the advent of spring, you
must have noted symptoms, perhaps
of indigestion, dyspepsia, rheumatism,
neuralgia, kidney disease, liver complaint, functional irregularities, or
nervous disorders. _)
Tuke warning sufferers . the symptoms you experience ‘are signals of disease. Delay not another day ; hesitation and indecision on your part may
forever seal your fate. If you have
already made efforts to:‘banish your
troubles by the use of other medicines
and thé treatment of physicians, and
these have failed, we counsel you to
put your fall trustin that great disease banisher, Paine’s Oslery Compound, Its use for a week or two will
convince you that you have truly commenced a new existence. Rev. W.
Aldridge, a leading and prominent
clergyman of Birmingham, Ala., says:
“1 had been afflicted for ten years
with what I thought to be heart dis-.
ease. but after having the physicians
examine me, I learned that I was almost dead from indigestion. They
told me they could give me medieine
that would relieve me but there was
no permanent cure. Then I began
using Paine’s Celery Compound whicb
gave me immediate relief, and I am
now well and enjoying good health. I
can recommend Paine’s Celery Compound t6 be the best medicine for all
ailments ; if people will use the compound freely,-they will have no doctors’ bills to pay.”
