Since the -announcement was made I have eagerly scannéd.your eolamns for some expression of a local character that would tend to further dispel the denseness which now pervades the mental atmosphere regarding this momentous subject, But my observation. has been futile, for reasons which I cannot comprehend: * Pome of -the brightest and most thoroughly cultivated intellects in this county are today enlisted in! the advancement of the cause of the suffragists, and why they are so diffident and delinquent in cultivating the minds of . others on @ question in which they are so deeply interested and in which there is so much involved, is more than I can explain. There is no reasonable subterfuge for such. indifference: and ‘delinquency. The cause is certainly a just and eqnitable one and no odium or unpopularity ought to attach to an individual because of its advocacy, Tt is only ‘where ignorance is bliss” and where prejudice has complete control ot the mind and its action that that mind will show its depravity by openly ridiculing its advocates, . But. this has been the environment of reform in all periods :of history. The inauguration. of. the Christian era met with the. same spirit of. ridicule and skepticism which evidently emanated from the same source of ignorance, preju— dive and depravity, Popular reform. will always have its enemies and will always encounter opposition from the sources it seeks to destroy. And while the operation ot woman suffrage cannot be said to be des— tructive ina general way, still it would mean the elimination from our politica! life of certain elements which ate not condacive to the Prosperity of a great republic. Aud where it would not be totally destructive it would have a restraining influence in the sense that it would counteract the influence and action of the masses ot ignorant and Vicious voters who are anoually led by political autocrate to the polls like lambs to the slaughter, It is an acknowledged tact by students of Politica) history that the greatest danger to a republican form of government such as we possess is the unlimited license which we confer upon our citizens, America since its inception has been regarded as the asylum of the persecuted and Oppressed from all quarters of ‘the glebe, and the ‘result is seen in the fact that it. contains such a homogeneous mass of humanity as the sun never previously shone upon, People of all classes and of all stations in life have swarmed to thése shores from foreign countries; the halt, the maimed, the blind, the dumb, the rich, the poor, the educated, the ignorant, the gentle, the Vicious, the socialist, the anarchist—in fact, all classes and conditions that may be enumerated in the human category, It has been our boast thaé we have conferred upon these people équal ‘political privileges, giving them an equal Participation in the affairs of our Government and bestowing upon.the man who could not distinguish the difference between a ballot and a, circus. poster the same authority that we would upon a native-born subject who had achieved th« highest intellectual attainments, Such a system could not fail to be detrimental to the interests and. perposes of a republic where every man is the peer, politically, of his neighbor; where every ballot cast is presumed to xert an equal influence and carry an equal weight, In support of this assertion I wish to quote one of the highest authorities on political ‘economy in America, Dr, Ross, who holds the Chair of Political Economy at Stanford University. In a recent speech _he remarked: “Sambo and Socrates, while both are equal at the. ballot box, were in reality quite the reverse—the former was ruled, goyerned, swayed by the force of some one to whom he had learnéd to look for guidance; the latter was actuated simply by the dictates of his own judgment and conscience,” ‘Thus it is that through the laxity and inaufficiency of our immigration laws vast hordes of ignorant, disreputable and depraved foreigners infest our country threatening Dy ‘theif ‘presence: the very vitality of the government which cost the best blood and brawn within its confines to establish and preserve intact. These jjliterate and degenerate forces are, generally concentrated ‘in our. large Political. centers, making them the prey of aspiring political bosses and repugnant politicians, To turn they become the willing and sub= servient taolg of jeonscienceless and grasping. corporations who manipulate the in— terests of the government for the furtherance of their own: corporate interests, In this manner political immorality and corruption creeps into every branch of oar Government, until it becomes repulaive to every self-respecting . citizen and demands our united efforts for its eradication. It is to counteract. this ingidious in~ fluence.in-our national life that women are today demanding political equality with men. In the veins of some of these women flows the blood of revolutionary sires, while others have achieved fame in the educa— tional and professional realms. But apart from their qualifications their demand’ is lased on the broad arid comprehensive principles of justice and equity. It is an inherent right to‘ which they are entitled as much as is the Prince of Wales to succeed his mother Queen Victoria upon her demise: And yet they are subjected to the humiliation of requesting this right at ‘the ‘hands of men, hundreds of thousands of whom canuot &peak or write the English language and not a few. of whom: are Chinese, ‘What & spectacle for the gods to behold in thi; much vatinted! liberty-loving ‘Fepublie in the closing of the nineteenth century, SaMvuEL Butter, Summarized Mention of Minor “Home 3 Hay penings,J. White and Miss Mamie Sanford. The business firms of lower Main street have clubbed together and had a large arc light suspended above the street in front of the Union Hotel, It is quite an, improve~ ment to that part of town, Tonight the Board: of City Trustees will hold a special meeting for the purpose of canvassing the vote at the election held for city officers on Monday last, The American Legion of Honor entertainment this evening will be the beat held by the Council for a long time, An interesting program has been prepared and a fine banquet will be served, Next Thursday will be St. Tammany’s Day, and Wyoming Tribe of Red Men and Ponemah Council, Degree of Pocohontas, are preparing to celebrate the occasion by an entertainment. It is expected that a large delegation of members will be present from Crees Valley. Oysters. : ‘‘When I was u boy,’ said the midHa 2aed_ man, ‘nobody ever used to think of stewing oysters in milk, though {believe that barbaric practice did bezin just before the war, but now almost everybody eats them that way, and they ‘ook them that way in restaurants. It seems a pity. The oyster is not the least of the blessings vonchsafed to us, and why anybody should want to disguise its gamyand at the same time delicious flavor with milk I do not see. “To stew oysters in milk is even worse than to dip them in batter before broiling or frying them, when but a thin coat of cracker dust is all that is required, and even this is likely to be dispensed with on broiled oysters by one who has eaten oysters broiled just as they come from the shell. . “But it should not be understood from this that batter can reasonably bear no relation whatever to the oyster; far from it. There is, for instance, the oyster fritter, certainly a very pleasant subject to dwell upon. But in this case the blessing bas-been added to the common place, not the commonplace to the bless.ing.’’—New York Sun. Spurgeon’s Points For the Preachers, *‘Mind you avoid inappropriate texts,’’ said Mr, Spurgeon one day to his college’ students. ‘‘One brother preached on the loss.of a ship with al] hands‘on board from ‘So he bringeth them to their desired haven,’ and another returning from his marriage holiday: ‘The troubles of my heart are enlarged, Oh, bring me ont of my distress!’ Mind your figures of are not cracked. Apropos of doctors’ beards and microbes, a lady writes: ‘Several yeara agoI took the steam cars to and from school. For a week or more our family physician took the crowded noon train, always sitting very near me, and entering into conversation. On questioning his sister-in-law. about his trips, she said: ‘Oh, he has a smallpox patient at C., and is afraid to take his carriage for fear of communicating contagion. So he takes the train.’ 1 always supposed his professional eye looked on me asa Prospective smallpox patient. ’’—Boston Transcript, F Christmas Tips, One of the objections to Christmas boxes, writes James Payn, ‘is that one is seldom quite certain whether one is Siving to the right people.
