~Nevapa City DaliLy TRANSCRIPT ' otherwise, to invite their fellow citizens to do the samme upon NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED EH. BROWN, Manager. TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION SyMet, += $6 Por Year. By Carrier, . . Delivered toany vart uffthe sity. Gn __—________________ Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City wiecleigeaisedesven -. TIAY 9, 1904 = FLAG DAY = HE American Flag Association, a patriotic organization which was formed seven years ago in New York City. of individuals and members from patriotic societies in the United States to promote reverence for and prevent the desecration of Flag of our Country, has, in accordance with its annual custom, issued its circular reminding the general public that Tuesday, June 14, 1904, will be the 127th anniversary of the stars and stripes as the Flag of the United States, and urges the observance of this anniversary in every city and town throughout America, Mayors are requested to order flags to be displayed upon the municipal buildings of their respective cities, and by formal proclamation, or === 12 1-2 Per Week their private buildings. School officers and teachers are requested to arrange for patriotic exercises ,appropriate to the day. American Patriotic Societies are urged, through their officers and members to assist in stirring up popular enthusiasm by public appeals through local mediums, and by observances of the anniversary. All American citizens are earnestly invited to join in the public recognition of the birthday of the emblem of our nationality. In many of the States pursuant to law, the public schools and also voluntarily in private schools, exercises will be conducted in celebration of Flag Day. This practice should be extended, and we hope the public schools of Nevada City. will fall in line this year and observe Flag Day with appropriate exercises and on a larger scale than ever before. Teach the story of the flag, what it represents, and have the young people pledge their fealty and loyalty to it. os On the 14th day of June 1777, Congress enacted: “That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” The number of the stripes having been increased by the admission of new States, our sure to be expanded future dawned upon our fathers and the original thirteen stripes were unchangeably restored by act of Congress on April 4, 1818, when it was enacted: “That from and after the fourth day of July next, the flag of the United States be thirteen horizontal stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be twenty stars, white in a blue field, and that on the admission of a new State into the Union, one star be added to the Union of the flag; and such addition take effect on the fourth day of July next succeeding such admission.” Since 1818 twenty-five stars or sovereign States have been added to the Union, making forty-five in all. Since the struggle of 1861-1865, the Flag has become the symbol of a mighty nation. It has been carried to the utmost parts of the earth, carrying liberty wherever it has been thrown to the breeze. Americans caunot fail of a feeling of pride and satisfaction, nor restrain the swelling of patriotism in the breast, when we contrast the meaning, in far distant lands, of ours and other flags displayed together. The stars and stripes within the recent past has come to possess new beauty for friendly eyes and new terror for the foes of liberty. ; We earnestly exhort our citizens to join in making Flag Day an event, and its celebration in 1904, a great event. Let us from one end of our land to the other, fling the stars and stripes to the breeze on June 14, 1904. May it greet the rising and salute the setting sun, and float‘all day long from every church edifice, school and building, public and private and however humble, throughout the entire land. Tn connection with the above appeal the American Flag Association recommends the following SALUTE TO THE FLAG FOR SCHOOLS, Atagiven hourin the morning the pupils are assembled and in their places in the school. A signal ie given by the principal of the echool. Every pupil rises in his place. Tho Flag is brought forward to the principal or teacber. While it is being brought forward from the door to the stand of the principal or teacher every pupil gives the Flag the military salute, which is as follows: The right hand uplifted, palm upward, to a line with the forehead, close to it. While thus stending with the palm upward and tn the attitade of arp all the pupils repeat together slowly and distinctly the following edge: “I pledge allegiance to my Flea and to the Republic for which it stands, One nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” ‘ At the words, ss pronounced in this pledge, “To my Flag” gach one extends the right band gracefully, palm upward, toward the Flag until the end of the pledge affirmation. Then all bande drop to one eide. The pupils, all sispaicg, all sing together in unison the song ,“‘America” — “My Oountry ‘Tis [s) ee.” ° 8 In the primary departments, where the children are very small, they are taught to repeat this, instead of the pledge as given for the older children: “I give my bead and my beart to God and myCountry. Ove Country, one Language, one Flag.” In some schools the salute is given in silence, ag un act of reverence, uaccompanied by any pledge. Atacsignal, as the Flag reaches its station, the right band fe raised, palm downward, to a horizontal position against the forehead, and held there until the Flag is dipped and returned to a vertical pl tion. seem, at ® second signal,a3 the hand is dropped to the side and the papil tek © bis side. The silent salute conforms very closely to the military and naval salute to the Fieg. Sehools may adopt the “ai ¥ . ealute” for special soa lent salate” fcr a daily exercise and the “pledge SUDERION COUNT Business Transacted at This Morning's Session. The colored gentlemen, who presided at first for the picked team, seemed to cast a fshadow over the Auroras.
