Mr. Glise is a wide awake, progressive citizen and does his own thinking. Four and two years ago he and most of thé rest of the farmers of the county wére Popalists. In Pleasant Ridge precinct, for instance, there were 61 votes polled in 1894,ana Webster, the People’s party candidate for Governor, got 39 of them. “Things will be different with us this year,” said Mr. Glise today, “for about all.of usareGagemen. We can’t stand Maguire and his Single tax scheme for robbing the farmers. What is more, we do not propose to be jobbed and crashed out by the Democracy, We will stand not only for Gage, thé farmer and minér, whom we regard as a safe, clean and able man whois of: the people and for them, but we will help to roll up a big majority for nearly every man on the State and county Republican tickets. We do not profess to be politicians and we are not officeseekers, but we think we know what is good for ourselves and the rest of the country. Our precinct two years ago gave Bryan a three to two majority over McKinley, but we have had our eyes opened since then, President McKinley has given us one of the best administrations the United States was ever blessed with, and we are going to stand by him and his party.” + 2@e + Another Nut For Courts to Crack, The News Letter says that the question of law which A. H. Ricketts, attorney for Baron Von Schroeder, owner of raised in the suit instituted by the Peabody against the Gold Hill Mining Company, if decided in his favor, may have a rather disturbing influence: in other cases of patented claims. He attacks: the validity of the United States patent to a strip of ground between the Gold Hill and Peabody on the ground that it averages in excess of the 300 feet on each side of a lode, all that can be patented, it is claimed, under the law of 1872. This Gold Hill patent, issued in 1883, covers 585 feet on the east side of its quartz lode, and’ the 285 feet in excess now taken up by the Peabody is the bone of contention. It will be interesting to note the decision in this case.
