The eccentric Ouida is credited with
saying that Kipling should be spanked

impertinence in daring to write “with:

When Louise Chandler: Moulton was
13, and read one of her own poems as a
school compesition, her teacher could
not believe that it was her own until
her truthful (and tearful) manner convinced him. Then he bowed his head
in reverence to her and said: “TI sincerely congratulate you.” ;
Ruth McEnery Stuart says she has no
keener joy than to find-a-goed story
developing under her brain and hands.
She hopes the time will never come
when she would feel satisfied with her
work after it is published, for then
there would be no hope of her doing
any better work. Like Rabbi Ben Ezra,
she hopes that “the bestis yet to be.”
Dumas, the elder, was notin the habit
of counting his money, but did so once,
afterward leaving it on the mantel
while ‘he left the room for a few minutes. When he returned and was giving
some instructions ta a servant he meehanieally counted the pieces © over
again and found a louis missing.
“Well,” he said, with a sigh, “considering that I never counted my money before, I can’t say it pays.”
