It is said that quite a number of sheep
which strayed from a large band that was
driven down from the mountains about a
week ago, are roaming about the woods in
the vicinity of the Kennebec House. _Huntérs have killed some of them and it is very
probable that there will be few of the sheep

HIS VIEW OF IT.
What the President of the Nevada
County Miners Association Says.
A Telegraph representative interviewed
Mr, Alf Tregidgo avd asked him what he
thought of the Peoples Party, and he replied as follows:
‘*The Peoples Party in Nevada county, he
replied, were like the ‘syndicate’ that was
responsible for the ruin of Rachael—they
were an unknown quantity. Of course it
was all right enough their voting for’ all the
State, County and municipal officers on
their ticket, but when 1230 miners, or at
least men living in a mining community who
had nothing. but. mining to depend vpon,
voted for Cornéll for Congress, he thought
they did so without thinking what they
were doing. , What in the name of coinmop
sense could that gentleman have done for
the miners in Congress if he had been electud? If the House had ‘been. Democratic
what relief could he have obtained for them
from that party, and if it was Republican
what sort of an appropriation could the California Peoples Party candidate have ohtainyears and who within the Jast four years organized the ‘‘California State Miners As’
memberg—which organization within that
time has sent able delegates, at unlimited
expense, to advocate their cause at the Nationa} Capital, and later forwarded petition
after petition to our representatives there in
. the miners interests. That now that seme
miner votes for a representative in Congress
who has no recognized party there with any
influence whatever—was something he could
aot understand. The Peoples Party have
nothing in their platform relating to hydraulic mining, and fthejr Representativey
FRENCH CORRAL LETTER.
A Few Items from Our Regular Correspondent There.
Eprror Transcript: Well, the election
is a thing of the past and there is not one
single, solitary, lone-born maa in all this
broad land who is any more ‘glad of it than
Baron Munchausen, When I heard the
first mutterings of political thunder it made
1a¢ so dang sadthat my heart was like a
lamp of sour dough, because, if there is
anything in the world I would .like to do
it is ta run for office; and 1 know-very~well
that if I Jive to be a thousand years old no
sane man would e¥er think of me asa candidate for poundmaster or town pump, or
anything else, It does seetn as though some
men are born to die with their greatest ambitions ungratiticd. But while there is life
th:re is hope, which is some satisfaction.
[Here follows a long grow] about the result of the election, which we omit. Let
us forget as soon as possible that an election’ took place last Tuesday, and get down
to regular business again.—Eprror TranSCRIPT, . y :
The TraXscrirt’s talented correspondent,
Mr. Samne} Butler, iu a letter afew days
ago stated thatFrench Corral was a
thrifty, booming burg, with a great future
as an agricultural and horticultural center,
with a twanty-stamp mil] pounding eement
out of which the gold protruded in large
gobs, giving employment to a large number
of men, etc., etc. I don’t think Mr, Butler saw French Corral, I think he must
have met some old resident who thonght
My.. Butler.was ‘an Eastern tourist, and
headed him off at Birchville or Sebastapol.
The factsare: French Corral is not @ great
center of any kind just now. The cessation of hydraulic mining has knocked the
center out of*it. There are no great horticultural resources in sight at present.
There are no great orchards of tropical
know nothing about that all important ques:
tion. He believed there was something in
their pla.form relating to ‘reducing the
price of gold” and he couldn’t understand
that to be the motive which induced °1230
Nevada county miners to vote for the Peoples Party candidate for Congress, Mr,
[regidgo furthér said—That the miners
should haye thought enough about their own
interests to have voted for a Representive to
Congress who was the nominee of one of the
two great political parties that has a
standing at Washington and who would have
it in their power tv grant them relief if
either of them so desired. Of course, he
thought that A. Caminetti should have been
returned, as he came froma mining—county;
had a good record as the ‘‘Miners’ Friend
both in our own State Legislature and at the
National Congress of the United States,
That. the Miners’ Association had fought
hard to obtain recognition at Washington by
demonstrating that ‘mining’? was the
paramount industry of California, and he
thought that removing a resident of a mining county and replacing him by a resident
of a valley county might be disastrous to
the cause; However, Hon. A. Caminett
served the miners’ faithfully and did all he
could for their interest whilst the Democratic party were in power at Washingt n.
When the Hon. Grove L. Johnson takes his
seat in Congress the Republican party will
be all powerful, and if that gentleman desires to work for the miner, as euergetically
as did his predecessor there wil] be nothing‘
‘to prevent him getting us-a large approof. two-hundred-fifty thousand. dollars
available tothe miners’ cause. He hoped
the Hon>Groye Lb. Jobnson would bs able
to accomplish.this inmediately after he took
his seat, as the miner’s who voted for the
Peoples Party candidate to Congress, were
that class who wanted relief right away, or
the next time, he feared they would vote for
the Prohibition nominee. = ~

Mr, Butler’s letter might cause some poor

Itis my own private opinion, and the
private opinion of many more who have
been talking a great deal about political
matters, that one of the county: candidates
lost many votes by bursting forth as a poet,
Not that it isinany way criminal or disgraceful to burst forth as a poet. One
might just as well, ordinarily, burst forth
in that way as any other way, but it’s a
mighty risky thing to do in a political
campaign, when there are so many ways
of getting a candidate by the ears and holding him up and dangling him as an object
of ridicule, Pointed humorous poetry. of
the regular four-line campaign sort is ade
missable, but religious poetry won’t do,
won't do, won’t do, In political, times
write the other sort. It'll pay better.
