Werum, San Francisco, Death of ste Pioneer. ‘The Virginia Cit City Chronicle , of Wednesday says: Alexander Miot, an old pioneer both of California and Nevada, died in this city Wednesday after a long and painful illness, through which he was tenderly nursed and cared for by his wife. Mr. Miot wasa native of . } Columbia, South Carolina. He came to California in 1849, and on the breaking out of the Piute war, in 1860, he came with his company from Downieville to this State and served through that war as a emer ng and Commissary ‘Major Hunkerford. Owing to the privations and exposures he was subjected toin 1860, during his military service, he contracted the seeds of the disease of which he died, nearly 57 years of age. a Mischievous Sprites There must-have been a whole army of April Foolers abroad Wednesday evening, judging from the extent to which the town was turned inside out. Fence gates . were swapped till they hardly knew. themselves. Store signs were re‘. moved from their regular hangings and put up in. other places without any regard= for the etertial’ fitness of things. Doorbells wére mysteriously rang till the owners thereof were exasperated beyond description. It was a regular “high jinks” time all around. Everybody but the boys and girls rejoices that there is but one first of April in a year. ee iad Death of Sam Terry. Yesterday morning Dr. F. M. Biber received a telegram from death of 8. L. Terry at Stockton, and the Doctor leaves on this morning’s train to attend the funeral which takes place under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias in which order the deceased was a Past Grand Chancellor. The Walla Walla Union of Washington Territory, gets’ off ‘the following at the expense of D. J. Crowley, formerly of this county : During the recent term of Court at Pomeroy, a number of the circuitriding lawyers attended a dinner at a private house. A lady, just from the East, on being introduced toone of Walla Walla’s brightest legal. minds, remarked : ‘‘Why, Mr. Crowley, you must excuse me, . but had I not redently left. Mr. Cleveland in the East, I . should have mistaken you for: him. L, know Mr. Cleveland well, and you are the exactimage of him. Mr. Cleveland, you know, is not much of a lawyer, but he is a very lucky man. My sister and her husband boarded in the same hotel with Mr. Cleveland for thirteen years, and they never thought he amounted to much until he was elected Governor and then President. Mr. Cleveland is a very ordinarylooking man. But, really, Mr. . inability to sleep to the Crowley; you must excuse my freedom, ut you do resemble Mr. Cleveland enough to be his brother.’”’ Those present report that for once in ‘his life it was impossible for Crowley to say a word. It refers to it as “the strange disease of modern life,”” declares that it is very prevalent in every class of society, but the most observable among the most wealthy, learned; and cultivated classes. It states that it sometimes assumes the form of a distinct malady, but that it is more often found associated” with It declares that physicians' have long thought that melancholy was caused by diseases, but that recently they are coming to the ‘conclusion that the diseases are the. ,result of mélancholy. “It'refers‘to the increasing number of suicides, and declares that they are caused in almost every instance by the melancholy condition of the persons who commit, the rash act. traces dyspepsia, restlessness, and cause.
