TERMS. OF. BUBSORIPTION ote 96 Per Your . Gy Carrier, on mg a Oakland has taken the ground that the prohibition of dancing and theatre-going by the Methodist discipline should be modified to an advisory,. rather than a prohibitive, basis. De, DR. DILLE, a prominent Methodist divine of The city at Los Angeles has enacted an ordinance for-. 11 bidding public fistic exhibitions, but allowing private exhibitions with not-less than eight-ounce gloves,. padded on the back with some soft material. 2 Phuts we ‘have two not very nearly: related issues up fel public diseussion. Dancing i is a natural expression of human emotion, from i _the child in tantrums to the dervish in ecstasy. There has -” probably been no people on the earth who have not danced in rhythmic ‘motion to something that sounded to their ears like music, It has been natural from’ the foundation of the earth for men_to Tejoice in their strength and to strive with one another in feats of agility, speed, strength, skill, and, so far ‘as can be seen, they will do so to the end of time. Dancing may be carried to an extreme that is destruc. tive of health, and, in its licentious Suggestiveness, may be destructive of good morals, Boxing may become so brutalizing’as to be destructive of tender emotions and-to congregate ' about it all that is most®vicious in social disorder. On the other hand, dancing may. become one of the most healthful and graceful of.secial pleasures, the means. of imparting that spirit of deference to man for woman which brings her near to him, and yet holds her ever part,-as something too good to be made common or rudely ‘familiar. Boxing, likewise, may teach self-confidence, poise, presence of mind, restraint of temper, courage, self-mastery in mind and hod; and bea source of physical stimulation without harm~ ful after results. The problem is to get the good ont of all things, and avoid the evil. It is a problem, and worthy of _ better thought than had been given it. It is goed to note that Dr. Dille has had the courage to take the stand he has, and good to note that Los Angeles has seen fit to prohibit public exhi-—. bitions of fistic encounters for cash. ; The drama is as {legitimate as the rostrum or the sihws? paper. It is as sensible to refrain from reading any newspaper, or hearing any lecture because there are yellow journals and demagogic orators as it is to cut off all dancing and condemn all boxing and stay away from all theaters because billy are given which are uot to be ‘countenanced, prize= fights are attended by “plug-uglies” and there are theatrical shows which abound i in unwholesome suggestion and exhibition In‘law there is a doctrine of reasonableness. that should have a place in ethics and iu the social and churchly attitude toward the subject under discussion. There are reasonable uses which -are lawful, but unlawful when they are no longer reasonable. The nearer any clergyman conforms to a meet reasonableness of interpretation in the Christian religion the better filled will his pews be on Sundays and. ° the greater his influence among his parishioners. In reasonableness there is power, and power for good. We should seek .to get the good ont of all things, leaving the evil to sittk to the dregs.
