. The Amendments, oe
The election advices are to the effect
that five of the eight constitutional
amendments submitted to the electors
. in this State were adopted. The three
“amendments beaten were the two relating to the judiciary and the one proposing to exempt State, county and
municipal bonds. It seems. that the
act of the last Legislature. prohibiting
the publication of amendments at the
expense of the State had the desired
effect and kept the people in the dark
about the amendments, As a result
the amendment that was rejected two
years ago modifying the State constitution in the interest of San Francisco
jobbing contractors, has been adopted
The State has thus served
notice on the bunglérs and boodlers of
the various cities of the State that they

_Why a Minister Stopped Preaching.
A minister had his salary cut down
one hundred dollars, a year or so ago
(and this was ina western church), because his wife wore a handsomer gown
than some of the prominent women in
the congregation. The reason was
given openly, and the matter found its
way into public print. The fact that
the wife’s wealthy aunt was the donor
~seemed to be of no consequence, and
the poor woman herself, irritated and
mortified at the publicity given to her
private affairs, succeeded in persuading her husband to withdraw from the
ministry.—“A Minister’s Wife,” in the
October Ladies’ Home Journal.
