An Unlucky Miner,

While coming off shift Saturday morning,
Joseph Sharkey, a miner ‘employed at the
Providence mine, met with an accident that
will incapacitate him for work for some

the truck when his right arm got caught
between the truck bar and one of the.poste
in the shaft, .The bone was fractured between the hand and elbow, and the whole
arm badly wrenched. Sharkey came here
recently from Angels Camp, Calaveras

yellow.
Some portions of the road between this
city and Newtown are in a very rough condition: a

below here and most of the loose stock is
looking well. =
There was a large attendaace at Sigourney & Brinkman’s soiree at Odd Fellows
Hall Saturday evening. These parties are
becoming very popular.
Drunken men were humerous Saturday
night and yesterday. ‘ Several fights occurred and two or three .arrests were made.
If this keeps up our town will seon be as
bad as Grass Valley.
Casper Cohn, thie dry goods dealer, has
taken out an auctioneer’s license. The first
-sale-toek-placeat his stere Saturday evening and was attended by a large number of
people. The bond required on a license of,
this kind is $10,000.
An epidemic of a malarial nature has
heen prevalent among the people of French
Corral and vicinity during the past two or
three weeks. Judging from the symptoms
as described by one of the afflicted we
would call it a mild combination of ague
and cholera morbus.

SUDDEN DEATH.
David Van Benthuysen Dies While
; Reading a Paper.
David Van Benthuysen died suddenly
about 8 o'clock yesterday: morning at his
home near this city. He was in town Saturday afternoon and had been in his usual
health for some time past. Yesterday morning he was talking with a man who has been
boafding at his house, the latter saying he
was not feeling very well and that he would
not go to work. Mr. Van Benthuysen said
he would not work if he didn’t feel well.
A few minutes later, while seated in a chair
reading a newspaper, he was observed. to
be" hreathing heavily. His wife went. to
him and at that moment he dropped over
dead. Heart failure was the cause of death.
Deceased came here some seven or eight
years ago and purchased the eld Cfaig
ranch, a short distance west of town. He
was @ very quiet, industrious man, well
thought of by all who knew him. He was
QuarternMster’s Sergeant of the Illinois
Cavalry D. During his residence here he
has been a devout member. of the Congregational Church: and at the time of his death
was one of the deacons.
He leaves a wife, a daughter and stepdaughter—Miss Lottie Harding—who are’
living here, besides a son in Wovdburn,
Oregon, and a stepson in IlMnvis. Deceaséd
was a native of New York, aged sixty-four

The Latest Developments In the Seduction Case at Fresno,
Fresno, November 10.—A warrant was
issued this evening by Judge Webb of the
Superior Court for thé arrest of Lee Blas—
ingame on a charge of criminal assault
alleged to have been committed on the person of Maud Beaden on Thauksgiving day,
1891, Miss Bearden being at the time but 13
years and 6 months old.
The complaint was made by L. P. Van
Doren, Miss Bearden’s fiatice. Van Doren”
met the girl last April and a strong friendship sprang up which ripened into love.
Several months ago, during a visit to San
Francisco, Miss Bearden confessed to Van
Doren that Blasingame had assaulted her.
Miss Bearden made an affidavit substantia.
ing Miss Bearden’s story was made by -her
older sister, now Mrs. A. R. Noyes of Oakland. The matter was brought before the
Grand Jury, which is now in session here,
to bring the matter before the court.
Fresno, November 11.—The case of Lee
Blastingame, charged with an assault on
Miss Maud Beardan, came up before Judge
Webb of the Superior Court this morning.
The Judge asked if the case had been before
the Grand Jury and if that body had investigated it. The attorney for the people stated
it had, but he did know the action the Grand
Jury had taken or would take.
The attorney for L. P. Van Doren, who
made the complaint, iusiated that the Judge

Friday afternoon about 4 o'clock John Fry
died at Grass Valley. .He had been ill for a
very long time with a dropsical complaint
and death was not unexpected. The deceazed went to Grass Valley many years
ago, and was a hard-working man. He
reared a family of eleven children—seven
daughters and four sons—all of whom survive, also an aged wife. Deceased was aged
77 years and was a native of Devonshire,
England.

The California Fruitilaxi Manufacturing
