Twelve. years ago in this town I killed four men. . You have recognized me. and have come for revenge.” “Not much, stranger. We don’t know anything about the four men and don’t want to. You live in Missouri, don’t you?’ i § do.”’ “Well, what we wanted te ask was whether three of a kind beat a straight in your state.” “They do not.” “Then that’s all, and you can go back to your snooze. A medical man has discovered that neither in youth nor old age is a man likely to make the biggest fool of. him self, Extreme youth usually is con sidered not to have arrived at the dignity of years of discretion, yet a homely proverb would have us believe that “there is:no fool like an old fool.” This medical observer has broached the the ory that there is an “aberration period. of middle life,” between the ages of 57 and 62.. “If.” he says, “a careful examination be made of the preventible disasters of the last 20 years and of . the. ages. of .those.who were held re. sponsible by the verdict of mankind for such lamentable issues, there will be found a strange coineidence in the range of their ages.” Here is an interesting and prictically inexhaustible field for investigation. Politicians who are “agin the government” may trace the blunders of an of some boss who was passing through the fatal period at the time, and “regrettable incidents” of all kinds, in war or peace, may be traced to their true origin. In time no doubt we shall appreciate the necessity of requiring all public men, on entering the fatal period, to take a five years’ holiday and to resume work only: when they have passed the age of aberration. —New York Press. ¥ Thought it Waa a Proposal. Taylor Wood in The Atlantic,. had we heard moans, cries and rumblings comi.g from below, and as.soon as the captain and crew were ‘removed the hatches had been taken off, when there arose a hot blast as from 4 charnel house, sickening and overpowering. -tn the hold were 300 ‘human. beings; gasping; struggling for breath; dying, their bodies, limbs and faces all expressing terrible suffering. In theit agonizing fight for life some had torn or wounded themselyes or their neighbors dreadfully; some were stiffened in the most unnatural positions. As soon as I knew the condition of ‘things'I sent the boat back for the doctor and some whisky. He returned, bringing also the captain, and for an hour or more we were all hard at work lifting and helping the poor creatures om. deck, where they were laid out in rows. A Age water and stimulant -reTivgt most them, Some, however. ead or Sas far gone to be restselfated. The doctor worked earnestly over each one, but 17 were beyond human skill. As fast as be pronounced them dead they were quickly dropped overboard. “Norma” and Liberty, -In an air in the opera of “Norma” the theatrical censor went so far as to cancel the word “liberta” (liberty) and substitute for it the word “lealta” doyalty). * * * Signor Ronconi, the famous baritone and a great public favorite, having, in the ardor of his role, forgotten the above mentioned emendation, was imprisonéd for three days in order to refresh his memory. NotJong after, singing the line in the “Blisir: d’Amore” describing bow a t enlisted, “‘Vende la liberta, si fe s to” (He sold his liberty to be a soldier); he waggishly altered it to Vende la lealta, si fe soldato.” This variation in the text was received with lively applause. by the public, who always warmly welcomed anything that savored of political opposition. ; The next day the poor sitiger was summoned by the head of the police te gecelve a reprimand for having said that “loyalty could be sold,” to which Roneoni replied by observing that a few days before he had been taught in @ way he was not likely to forget that “lealta” ought always to be substitut“Modern Italy.” --Semi-Centennial YearTHR INDEPENDENT, New York. ~ Only $2.00 per year, or at’ that rate for any part of a year. ‘Send Postal for Pree Specimen Copy.
