Se AB Gk eet THE TRANSCRIPT. TELEPHONE NO. 41. P. 0. BOX B Issued Every'Byening, Sundays Excepted AT NEVADA OITY, OALIFORBIA,”». + —BY— BROWN & CALEINS. = TERMS OF SUBSCRITTION : By Mall, -«* = 2: * $6 Per Year By Carrier, . 12 1-2c Per Week Delivered to any part of the city. THURSDAY ....4. Noy, 14, 1901 Is Now Appreciaied The great advantages and: benefits .derived by our people from the recently constructed sewer system are becoming more apparent and appreciated every day, as time rolls on. Abourtwo years ago, when the City Trustees turned the system over to the citizens for practical use there were many who scoffed at its efficiency while a few ridiculed the idea of our people needlessly attempting to put a sewer system ‘into operation in our mountain city, where there was natural drainage into the creeks and ravines and where the wafting of the pure breezes were constantly driving’ all impure miasmea away. Other chronic kickers and silurians condewnedc it as a useless expense aud a money-making scheme for interested parties, but notwithstanding the opposition of these bard-headed people the great majority of our taxpayers favored and indorsed the innovation and so the enterprise was successfully launched and executed in a first class maboer. Now things are obanged, as the people have had an opportunity to test its merits and enjoy ite sanitary ecccompaniaments, while many give expression to their surprise and say, “I don’t see how our peeple ever got along without it.” Many of those who first strenuously opposed it will occasionally and unconsciously give vent totheir sincere opinion in this strain, “I told youso; I knew it was a good thing.” This is ‘proof of their conversion, but some of them when taken to task are too stubborn to admit the facts, . It was not denied from the first that the expense of connecting houses with the mains of the sewer system would work a liardship on many of our citizens who were in humble circum: stances and in some cases cramped for means, but ample time and opportunity was given and now many of these people have by close economy and good management -had the sewer connections made and have it,alj paid for. improvement to their homes and find it very convenient. for heaith and comfort, One thing is certain, Nevada City could not get along without it now. There are still a few who have not as yet connected their houses with the main system, but they are rapidly falling into line and soon the. entire city will be connected. It is a great pleasure to be able to walk around the city and breathe pure air and not be compelled to face the nauseating stench which formerly arose from the old fashioned, filled-up closets and stink-holes. It is frankly stated by many conservatiye people that there is much less contagious disease to be found in our community. since the inauguration of the sewer system. ‘ Malaria, typhoid fever, diphtheria occacionally get a foothold in.our town, but there is. much less of it prevalent than formerly, for with the proper guarantine regulations the disease does not spread as there are no foul gutters closets or filth pools to propogate and spread the disease germs. With the addition of such -valuab‘e and important improvements our city is rapidly forging to the front as one of the fairest, most healtful and upto-date towns on the Pacific Coas:. Let the good work go on. Mine Looking Well The Poss quartz mine, which is Jocated on the San Juan ridge about two miles from the town of North San Juan, isrunoing in full blast and is looking first-class. Sam McCullough; who is superintendent of. this property, is a capable and experienced mining man and is certainly doing work in the development of this valuable property, The prospects of the mine are very flattering—in fact never was better, and it is generally believed . that the! successful outcome of the Boss mice will result in several other properties being opened up on the » Ridge. , _—_———— + *@e NORE Their S2cret is O17. The national chairman determines who shall be the stars.in this department. An ex-president is’ most in demand, a speaker or an ex-speaker comes next as a rule, and senators and representatives are invited to speak in the order of their usefulness. One speech by an ex-president is worth half a dozen efforts by other men, though they may be more logical and eloquent. The candidate himself, when an orator, will draw greater crowds than anybody else, but if he is wise he will let i the national committee arrange hia !t!nerary and schedule. Headquarters are always overrun with volunteers for the stump; the star, or man with a repu-. tation, waits to be invited or urged. Most of the lesser men are laborers for hire, but others are ambitious to make a reputation as.a stepping stone to political office, and some are intensely in earnest and eager to be useful to their party. The nativnal committee settles for the. expenses of spellbinders, unless they insist on paying their own way, which is unusual. Some of the great orators receive handsome sums for their services and travel in state.— Wome Magazine. ete SIERBA HEVADA SALOO 0000 BOWLING ALLEY (NEXT DOOR) Finest WINES AND Liquors. Tbe Truckee Republican of yesterday contains the following, and the aesistant editor takes the responsibility of publishing the article in full, and leave the public generally for further com~mente: The Nevada City TransoriPT of Saturday published a description of fireas ‘published in that paper November 9, 1863, The republication of the articles bas caused many a gray haired man “to stretch the hands of memory forth to warm them at the glowing thoughts of long ago.” Not least in thought in this connection, however, is that the same N. P. Brown, who. published the paper then, having established it three years
before, is stillat the helm on the TRANSORIPT. 5 Few, if any other, instances of so long and faithful service can be found in this State, For over a generation through his paper, he has ‘worked for the advancement of his town and the promotion of the country’s greatest industry, mining, and both he and his paper have won and are entitled to the greatest consideration both on the part of the people of Nevada City and the county generally. Too often we wait until a man is gone before we express appreciation of noble service. If he wereto pass away papers would contain columns of eulogies en his good work and patient, untiring devotion to his country’s interests. No thought of dissolution is entertained in his case, for vigorous and strong, physically and mentally, another generation may still find him at the post of duty, but we do not believe in rendering to a man his rewards while there is still time for them to be a benefit and pleasure to bim. Brain-Food Nonsense, Another ridiculous food fad has been branded by the most competent authorities. They have dispelled the silly notion that one kind of food is needed for brain, another for muscles, and still another for bones. A correct diet will not only nourish a particalar part of the body, but it will sustain every other part. Yet, however good your food may be, its nutriment is destroyed by indigestion or dyspepsia. You must prepare for their appearance or prevent their coming by taking regular doses uf Green’s August Flower, the favorite medicine of the healthy millions.
