It is something to be proud of, and its citizens ‘are proud-of them, They are also proud of its private as well as its public buildings, not the least of which is the Sanitarium, Later on this institution will be referred to. San Jose has been called ‘‘The City of Roses,” and well it may be. Every conceivable variety * thrives in the open air; and the perfume which greets the delighted sense when the blossoming season is at hand can, -never be forgotten by one who has felt its influence —it steals upon one with such a soft, gentle fragrance that one can imagine’ himself transported to the tlowery plains of ‘A raby the Blest,”’ ji Page after page might be written of the beauties of this city. I might with truth me say that the female portion would take up a large space under that heading. Even Nevada City, noted as she is for the loveliness of her female population, would have to look well to her laurels-were a com parison made, ; It may be asked, ‘‘What has’ this got to do with the Pilgrims?” Everything. They came, they saw the possibilities, and they helped to make this city the garden spot that itis, They are among its, most prominent citizens, and no public measure is undertaken without consulting them and seeking their support. Of many I have already spoken in a previous letter. At present I shall°endeavor to write of the rest and say just what I think Of them. The other day ‘I had the pleasure of having a long conyersation with the HON, MYLES P. O'CONNOR, ; He did not know me at first, but I did him, although maty years had elapsed since last I saw him. He looks the same—does not appear to have aged a day—and if he should happen to visit his old home in Grass Valley’ the same genial smile, the same warm grasp of the hand would greet them as of yore. In my opinion, Mr. O'Connor 18 the true type of a gentleman. He is modest aud unassuming to a degree, and when I mentioned some of the good works he had done—some of the benefactions he has had conferred on his fellow-men—he held up his hands deprecatingly and said : “I beg of you, Mr. Mead, to say nothing of those things.” I said : **Much as 1 esteem you, Mr, O'Connor, there is a duty I owe the readers of the Transcript, and . mast respectfully decline to grant your request— I believe that credit should be given where credit is due,” He sighed resignedly, gave a bright smile, which lighted up his honest face, and said : ‘‘Well, you newspaper men will have your way,” but I could not-get an approximation even of the many thonsands of dollars he has spent ih charitable work. Before iy proceeding further inthis direction, let me ag state his public services, He represented Nevada county in the Eleventh session of the Assembly; in the 2: Kighteenth, Nineteenth, Twentieth and Twenty-first sessions of the Legislature he represented Nevada county in the Senate. In all of these he did well. He was kuown as ‘‘Honest Myles P. O'Connor,” and the t : county which he represented derived addi-_ e Gold, $36,935; silver, 961.22 their prompt and efficient yet easy action, mer are gray, and few are and thickens the growth of the hair, the way for you if you needa good medicine, George was not taking his usual interest in the game. His miind wandered. He could not give an intelligent answer to a question addressed to him, His mind-seemed to be concentrated something under the table. He squirmed, he wriggled, until at last an ‘‘Ah!”’ escaped him, and he sank back in his chair a happy man. What had he done?’ Whocould tell? A ‘smile that was ‘‘child-like and bland” spread over his face, and the.game proceeded. -But the time soon came to break up the card party. George sat in his seat. He cast furtive glances under the table, but not a move did he make. Great drops of perspiration trickled down his face, and still he sat there. Finally he told the hostess that he had taken off one of his. boots and was afraid that he could not get it on again ag {his foot had. Would the lady kindly lend him one of her husband’s boots? she would, She did. It was not a case of “tone shoe off and the other shoe on,” He had three boots, and as he walked down Broad street he wobbled like a duck—the No. 7 boot of the “old man” was too much for him, and his own, which he carried in his hand, entirely engrossed all his attentions, upon ’ Alas, the next day came, and with it the boots went up in smoke. While George lost his footwear, he was saved many a good swear. There is a compensation in all things. In San Jose he is looked upon as the leading dealer in paints, oils and plateglass. He has done well, and the same qualities that made hun so popular in Nevada county have followed ‘him to his new home, and I am told that genial George is one of the “‘big guns” of the Garden City, FRANCIS’ SMITH, the iron-pipe man, whose country residence is one of the most beautiful in the whole Santa Clara valley, was a former resident of Nevada county, He kept a tinware store at North Saw Juan. I have not seen his placé, but those who have. been there tell me it is a perfect paradise. His place of business is in this city, on Beale street, and if *‘the sound of hammer, blow on blow,” is any criterion, his output must be large. I cannot finish thig tonight, so two or three will be noticed in a future letter. A somewhat noted light of fistiana, the charmed circle ‘of pugilism, has. made his advent into our midst during the past few days in the person of Mr, Jack Murphy, late. of San Francisco. . As is well know Mr. O'Connor made his fortune in the investments he made in the stock of the ~~~Tdaho mine at Grass Valley, Some years ago he removed to San Jose and the people of that place have reason to rejoice at the choice he made, What was their gain was Nevada county's logs, The . Sanitarium,of which I have already spoken, was built entirely with his money and was presented outright to the Sisters of Charity, It is situated between San Jose and Santa Clara and commands a beautiful view of all the surroundisg country; Every appliance that scienge or experience can stiggest for the care and comfort of the invalids who seek its health-giving shelter and the assist: ance of its able corps of physicians and nurses has been put in use. Mr. O;Connor, in his extensive travels throughout the world, has made special studies of the different methods of the different. hospitals of This is Cut No. ‘ ° Europe, and these have been intelligently ae! ~ gommunicated to the faculty’of the Institu: tion which he projected and paid for. To sum it all up it is what ite name signifies—a veritable Sanitarium; and it is a monument . to his memory that will Inst for ages, . Nor is this all., His private charities are alinost beyond belief, and I am told that he has subscribed several thousand dollars to the Catholic college about to be erected in Menlo Park.
