beset saris ~ Issued Every Evening, Sundays Exxcepted, at Nevada City THE BATTLE BETWEEN question at times, hence the country will await with deep NEVADA Civ ‘DAILY TRANSCRIPT NAT. P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED BE. BROWN, Renseneatasid < TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION . Byfiel, -« = «+ = $6 Por Year . By Carrier, pe ‘ Delivered toany, part uffithe city. 12 1-2c Per We SATURDAY.... poaiicses Pe vete.eeeeNovember 15, 1902 ee ae fecha allllinetbadiah sid aenneaeeodiecaeeantatlel KING EOP OLD SHOT AT. o BrussEts, Belgium, November 15—Three shots were fired at King Leopold this morning as he was proceeding to. the Cathedral to'attend the ceremony in memory of the late Queen Marie Henriette. The man was an Italian named Rubens, who was immediately arrested, The police had great‘ difficulty in keeping him from the crowd. . He said he was an Anarchist. ‘HOUSEWIVES AND SERVANT $ SCS E. ies of battle has been hurled by Chicago housewives at the hired girls’ union and the struggle that is imminent will protably make the Pennsylvania coal strike look like less than thirty cents in comparison. It has been decreed by the Chicago Housewives’ Association that every girl who seeks employment at household service must present a diploma issued by the association, without which she cannot get a place. These diplomas are to specify that the holder has been a year in one place, and whether she has been “satisfactory,” ‘‘good,” or “very efficient.” This raises an issue which the maids of the kitchen will not be slow to meet, perhaps. It proves that the housewives of Chicago are ready to fight, and that they will not longer submit tamely to the demands of girls who have had things practically their own way. : Heretofore the menfolk of the country who employ other men have had the field in meeting the demands of organized labor, but now the women are face to face with the problem. Unionism has ‘invaded the Chicago households and-upset theories of domestic economy long entertained by the wives of millionaire pork-packers. The hired girls, encouraged by the submission of housewives to any terms they might dictate, forced the labor question upon the matrons at the head of Chicago’s most aristocratic households. Hence the demand for diplomas. Here in California ‘the few remaining Chinese and the rapidly increasing Japs provide a large part of the house servants, yet the hired: girl question is a never failing theme of discussion in many homes. East of the Rocky Mountains it becomes.a burning interest the result of the struggle precipitated in Chicago. In Nevada City the scarcity. of servant girls is the most important phase discussed by our citizens in connection with the servant-girl topic. There is a constant demand for competent female help and many housewives who have no use for Japanese or Chinese help, find it extremely difficult to secure another hired girl, when the ene they now employ takes a notion to get married or to leave for other causes. The condition of affairs concerning the” hired-girl problem are vastly different here to what they are in the “Windy; City,” for no able-bodied young woman has to carry a volume of affidavits and credentials around in order to secure a position. AgainIn Eruption Only a Tramp. Wasmineton, Ind., November: 14,— The Royal Blue Baltimore and Ohio fiyer, from St, Louis to New York, was wrecked twenty miles east of here this morning.
