Beating a Newspaper.
There are some men who think it smar
to beat a newspaper out of a few dollars. In
after life these men wonder why-it is that
they are so unpopular when they” desiré to
run for office or obtain an appointment
Most any man can beat a newspaper out of . —
“a year’s subscription, ‘says the Oroville
Register, or out of a small amount of job
work, but it-never pays them in the end,
consider that they have
gotten ahead of the paper and are happy to
They, however,
there is so little kick from the owners,
The bills are usually small and it don’t pay
to sue the delinquent subsriber or the man
who swindles out of a few dollars worth
of work, but the paper bides its time.
Sooner or later the man runs for office, to
be a ‘delegate, to receive an appointment or
to get public recognition of some sort or
kind and now comes the other innings.
If. the man is a small fry he is simply let
alone and unable to get his name before the
public he fails in his object. If, however,
he is ef some importance, then the battery
of the paper is turned against him and he
is assailed with shot and shell, with ridicule
and sarcasm ahd white light of publicity is
thrown over his life in the past and when
‘utterly crushed and_beaten he retires from
the field he learns too late that his. little,
swindle in which he beat the paper has cost
him all that he coveted in public life.

The Overland Christmas Number.
—
From a purely artistic point of view the
‘Christmas Overland Monthly is the most
attractive number that has been issued .under Mr. Wildman’s management.» The outside cover will be in green, gold and brown,
on pure white. The famous old Overland
Grizzly seems almost out of place jin his
modern setting. Mr, Joaquin Miller’s
great masterpiece, -‘The Song of the Balboa Sea,” is continued in this number; and
Mr. Paul's remarkable narrative of the doings of the ‘Vigilance Cummittee of 56’ Sis
brought ‘to a close with this number, Asa
hronicler of Pacific Coast history the Overland will begin a series of biographical
sketches in this number on “Famous Californians of Other Days.” The subjects
treated in the first article are Senator
Henry S, Foote, Gwin and Broderick, Dr.
Durant and Col. Jack Hayes, Under the
caption, ‘The Decline of the Mission Indiang,” Messrs. Scanland and 5. P. Clark
throw some light on the much mooted
question, :

The Vote for Governor.
‘SAN FRANcrisco, November, 15.—Only
‘three counties -have reported complete official returns on the vote for Governor.—Las‘sen, Mariposa and Santa Clara, The count
now stands: Budd 110,948, Estee 109, 798.
Budd’s plurality 1150. There are still
‘thirty-seven precincts and. official canvass

The following bids were received for the
building of a steel bridge across Deer creek
at the foot of Broad street:
G. B. Dean, $1,650. 7
Pacific Bridge Company, $1,790,
B. McMahon & Son, $1, 450.
‘Cotton Bros; & Co., $2,180.

;
B. McMahon & Son, concrete 2, butments,
$990.
=
Weisenburger & Coffey, stone abutments,
$1,100,-and $1,250.
Owing . to the fact that the bids of G. B.
Dean and B. McMahon & Son were for a
lighter bridge than the Board considers
necessary, and also because they had made
their estimates on the supposition that, the
bridge was to cross the creek. straight and
not on a skew, which would require more
material and labor and consequently their
contract price would have to be increased,
it was deemed advisable by the Board not
to’ consider these bids. The other bids
were taken under consideration ‘watil this
evening, when the Board will meet again,
The bids of Coan & Grose, Weisenburger
& Coffey, and J. W. Dean, for the abutments, were for the size abutments specified
by the Board in their advertisement,
whereas it will be necessary for the. abutments to be about four feet longer, owing to
the skew.
:
There were. a number of citizens present
to hear the bids read and listen to the pro~
posals of the different bidders. The general
opinion seems to be to have a substantial
and durable bridge built, and to have it
constructed as quickly as is consistent with
good work.

Francisco?the gubernatorial election,
evidence of frand comes to light. That
Morris M. Estee, the Republican candidate,
was counted out there seems no doubt, and
steal from him sufficient votes to throw the
election to Budd on the face of the returns
is apparent. The Executive Committée of
the Republican State Central Committee does
; not intend, however, to humbly~ submit,
The members of that body have held daily
sessions since the election. They have considered the situation, and have determined
to fight to the last ditch, They have employed Delmas & Shortridge and Kuight &
. Heggerty as attorneys, and areinow preparing fof a contest. The fact that Mr, Estée
carried more counties'than any other candidate who ever ran for Governor in California
demonstrates that he is the popular choice ot
the people. He comes to San Francisco
with’a plurality of over 10,000 votes, but
that immense number is swept aside by an
apparent plurality here: for Mr. Budd ot
close to 12,000. Such aresult is unprecedented in the history of politics in thi:
State, and vaturally the suspicion is arouse
that it was obtained by fraud. The officia]
counting of the returns makes a certainty of
the suspicion and shows that’ some queer
things were done by the precinct électior
officers. In many. precincts the work was
so coarse that election officers through fear o
committing a felony declined to authenticate
the returns and sent them in w.thont indorsement of any kind. The law provide:
that the poll and tally lists must be signea
by a majority of the board, but in over a
dozen precincts alréady counted nu such authentication was attaghed,
