DONATION DAY DRAWING NEAR
12 1-20 Por Week . . )
Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City . :
San Francisco, Nov. 16—The State Miners’ ~ ynvention
met this morning. State Senator Chas. Belshaw, presiding. . 4
Gov. Pardee madea grand speech of weleome on:
the State. Peay
S the day set apart by the President of the United
States and the Governor of California as a time of
National Thanksgiving fast approaches, thoughts of
the condition and happiness of others naturally im-. :
press themselves upon the minds of all unselfish people and
a general feeling of anxiety prevails through our community
that the larder of every household be-filled and that the comfort of those in straightened circumstances be assured, so
that there may be a universal rendering of praise and thanks-. 11 4 , lengthy protest against the United States action togiving to the Bountiful Giver of all blessings. When one
pauses and looks around at this season of the year he is sure
to find, even in his own neighborhood, some person who is in
need of charitable assistance—those perhaps, who lack the
ordinary necessaries of life with which to prepare an humble
meal, let alone a Thanksgiving dinner—and it should be our
special duty to interest ourselves in the welfare of all such
and see that they are provided for, or at least contribute some
necessary article that will insure their happiness and com-,
fort. If any one wishes to experience real, unadulterated
happiness of spirit and true gratefulness of heart, let him do
a kind and charitable act and contribute something of his
means, no matter how small it: may be, to the deserving poor.
An act of practical charity, coming from the pocket-book as
well as the heart, will insure a happy Thanksgiving and a
Merry Christmas—it will make you feel glad and rejoice to
know that those around you are not suffering for the com—
forts of life, but that all are able to have plenty of fuel and
sufficient clothing to protect them from the winter elements
and to.enjoy their holiday dinners.
Everything points to a big donation day next Friday,
for a deeper interest and anxiety is manifested for the suc—
cess of the event than was ever shown here before. The
school children already have their hearts enlisted in the
cause and will bring their contributions to Washington
schoolhouse and join in the parade. The teachers and pupils
of the Gold Flat school have been invited to join in the pro~anaine amd will make a on s
County Assessor Schroe or fas been appointed to-act as
marshal of the parade, and the selection is indeed a most
excellent one and is endorsed by everybody. One of the attractions will be the Boys’ Band, which has donated its services. There will also be some amusing features, and a
number of surprises may be looked for.
Many of the fraternal organizations have already contributed liberally toward the Donation Day fund, and it is
probable that other organizations will be heard from. this
week. The Elks, who are noted for their charity the world
over, have contributed the munificent and generous sum of
$25, which is the largest amount donated by any of the orders
so far.
The Ladies’ Benevolent Society, whose membership is
now over sixty, are working hard to make the coming Donation Day the best and most successful one that has yet been
observed in this city, and everybody should join in assisting
them to bring about this desired result.
