It is a Hindoo story, but many another could be written with California, rather than one of the Bengal provinces, for its theater of action. It was the opium habit that drove the desperate men in Folsom to plan their break for liberty, as it was the craving for that drug that-led Convict James-Roberts into captivity, and it is not impossible that the same masterful craving may work the'jundoing of other members of that desperate gang. It is not far wide of the mark to affirm that there are more confirmed opium “fiends” than habitual drunkards in California. Their name is legion. Men who are brought into close contact with the “hobo” fraternity are ready to affirm that a large share of them are opium “fiends,” and denizens of the half-world are in perhaps equal proportion ameng those who have passed throngh “the gate of a hundred sorrows” never to pass out again. Whether the opium habit is a cause of criminality or criminality the cause of the opium habit may be matter for debate, but the fact that the two, criminality and the opium habit, are in close relation needs no proof. It is a matter of common observation. ; Opium makes men desperate. The most terrible crimes are committed under its inspiration and, urged by the craving for the drug, there is no crime that the opium “fiend” ‘will not commit to obtain satisfaction for that craving; yet satisfied, the ravening human beast become docile and would not lift a hand in malice. The stock story of the “fiend” is that he learned the use of the drug and became a slave to it through illness and a physician’s prescription. The truth more often is that he become the associate of lewd and lawless companions and was induced to take his first lesson out of curiosity, or the spirit of perversity which had already come to characterize his con-. 8 duct. Only a few lessons were required to make his condemnation confirmed. Having passed in at “the gate of a hundred sorrows” a few times, generally in a California Chinatown, he goes in at the gate to come not out again until carried out in his coffin. Is it partly because we are so mightily concerned about the drink evil that California is so blind to the danger of the growing and greater evil of the opium and morphine habits? Are we straining at the gnat and swallowing, without knowing it, the camel? It would not be easy to substantiate the inference that the drink habit leads to opium, but very easy _ indeed to show that laziness, loafing, ignorance of a trade or other fruitful occupation leads, through vicious habits and consorting with evil companions, to that “gate of a hundred sorrows” which swings in, but not ont. A great microbe farm has been established by an American vutside of London, where a dozen or more chemists are employed in manufacturing the most dreadful diseases known to mankind and experimenting with remedies to cure them. It ie to be regretted that violence should accompany such a strike as the one now existing in Ohicago, and yet it is only what is to be expected. Ap unguarded street car, far from help, is too great a temptation to be resisted. Even if the strikers themselves do not atteck it, their lawless friends enjoy the pleasure of breaking the windows.
