A Boom in Mining in California Is as
Certain as Anything Can Be.
Marysville Democrat: In conversation
' with a well-known mining man recently he
informed a representative of the Democrat
that there is an approaching boom in quartz:
mining, which will extend over all the
mineral districts.of the State. One reason
assigned is the low price of farm products,
which leaves such a small margin of profit
to the farmer that he cannot afford to pay
remunerating prices to laborers, therefore
many of them will take to the hills té hunt
for precious metals. :
Another reason advanced is ‘that the
improved machinery in quartz mining enables the miner to extract gold and silver
at much less expense than in years past.
per ton now can be. worked so .as to pay
as much profit as usually was derived from
much more valuable ore 4 few years ago.
The cost of machinery is much less and so
is the price of labor and other necessary re‘quirements leading to the extracting of
precious metals from the lodes. ;
In this county there are signs of revival
— of quartz mining in many directions, while
‘a few are engaged in the placer. diggings,
‘There are many well detined quartz ledges
in this county that will again be prospected.
some of them of sufficient value in gold to
pay to work by the new and improved process,
-This writer can point out more than one
lode that have been prospected and found to
contain silver as well as gold and in-one of
them an essay did show $35 a ton in silver,
At one time a tunnel was started in the]:
side of the hill below where the croppings
are, but it was abandoned. long before the
lode was reached. To thé south of the
E.npire ranch,.Mooney’s old place, there is
a well-defined large-sized vein or lode of
‘decomposed quartz, in which gold has been
found. This hay not been prospected to
“any considerable extent, yet. 1t will undoubtedly:yield from $8 to $13 per ton,
But when the quartz was taken from this
< t
ae lode and assayed twenty-four years ago it.
was considered of no value for milling.
There are others that have been prospected in the same way and abandoned,
while a few have been worked to profit, . :
but where the ‘quartz would not average
more than $20 to the ton it did not. attract
attention,

return my sincere and hearty thanks.

The next storm will reach the Coast about
November 27th, cross the western mountain

Thecvol wave will cross the west of

central. valleys about December 2d, and the
Eastern States about Decémber 3rd.
The most‘notable feature of: this disturbance will be the precipitation, which — will
be above the average of the past four months.
With-each succeeding disturbance the rains
or snows will encroach on the drouth sections of the past Summer and Fall, till by
the first part of January, 1896, an ynusuat
amount of snow and rain will have fallen,
As the October drouth was correctly
foretold, it well be of much more juterest
to note the forecasts of these general snows
and rains, If these lattér verify the forecasts the interest will largely increased as
the crop season. weather of 1896, the calculations for which are now comiplete. :

Future of Horses.
DO bis pe
woh
One hundred‘and fifty patents have been
issued to flying-machine inventors, of horseless carriages for the roads, to ‘be propelled
by electricity, by steam, by gas and gasoline, hot air, springs and perpetual motion,
but none of these patent claptraps are practical. The only use thus far is for the
papers to frighten farmers into selling off
their horses befure the horseless age comes.
The city, horse dealers have worked that
racket so strong that they have bought
thousands of horses of the frightened farmers for less than it cost to raise them, and
shipped them East and to Europe at two
to four times the price, and it is now beginning to dawn upon the farmers’ that the
supply of good horses is exhausted, and that
prices are advancing in all the city markets,
and those who kept their courage and had
faith in good horses, and kept their horses
until the scare was over, are already finding
eager buyers at good prices for all the good
prices are not so much of a consideration as
to find the good horses.

The Mill Will Close Down Next Month
For the Winter.
A correspondent writing to us from English Mountain says about a foot of snow fell
there several days ago, but the weather at
the time of writing was'mild and pleasant,
The mill is still running, but, will be
closed down about the 15th of December,
by which time nearly all the ore in the bin
will be crushed.
. Bob McCullough and his brother will remain in charge of the mine during the winter and look -out for the buildings and other
property. Next spring Superintendent O,
W. Howard will start the mine up again,
after the snow gets off so that work can be
carried on with expedition and safety.
Supeintendent Howard has gone to New
York on mining business. :
