Eprtor. Transcript :—The libel case of Fitch vs. De Young is in progress before Judge Finn “of the Superior Court anda jury, and enough has been developed of the evidence to show that there was not the slightest. reason for the aspersions of the Chronicle. This does nét take the community by surprise, for every assault of the Chronicle upon private character that has ever been sifted before a jury, lias »been found equally baseless and malicious. {t is natural that there should be riyalry, and even enmity, between news-. papers which contend for the patronage and esteem of a community. But that.is-no reason*for either to insist that the other is a shameless outlaw, guilty of bribery and all indecencies, betraying every public trust. Yet that is the-Chronicle’s idea of warfare. If it dislikes a man it paints him in colors that would adorn Satan, and so overdoes the matter that its statements are always taken with incredulity, ana even sympathy is-afforded—tethe-object of its wrath. As Mr. Fitch hasin ais time been an unreasonably, bitte: antagonist of those he disliked, honor: were somewhat even. “But in his case ihere is the distinction drawn that he is believed to be honest, even if prejuliced, and not to sell his abuse to the highest bidder for it. Juries are funny things in San. Francisco, and it is nard to predict their probable action , vut Fitch has so com) letely proved u negative of all the Chronicle allegec igainst him in this tase that all the jury fixers in this town will be puzzlec .o prevent a verdict against the Chron icle—to which, as in wll cases of re puke to that “live paper,” the public will say cordially, “Amen.” That terrible scourge of mankind the cholera, is creeping up the Coast und we will probably have a visitation wn San Francisco. The town is a well prepared -for-it-as-it-can—well--be . with its antiquated 4t which are merely — elongates ress pools, —Phe—doetors—are—excites »ver the matter, but the public are a yet unmoved apparently, and will be un il there is considerable mortality, when the town will be made to smel. oheaven with disinfectants: We have royal visitors in the shapc xt. he olive skinned Queen of th: sandwich Islands, and scions of noble ind kingly families from Europe. Al proper attentions are being shown t hy iskind Queen by the authorities ut society is not stirred muchove; er advent,‘The same is true of tha of the grand nephew of Emperor’ Wil liam, Frederick Leopold, and of Princ: igsterhazy. These are worthy, comnon-place’ youths, who are trying t see the world without putting on tox nany airs, and they have been allowsd to do it pretty) much unmolested. it is evident that San Francisco is becoming a cosmopolitan city. There was atime when our people woul. have tumbled over each other in their frantic efforts to engross the visitor. and pay homage to their ineffabilities. But that is past, for we are too mucl. accustomed to distinguished arrival ‘o bother our heads about them. Iti: not to be dcubted that this is an improvement in ou: manners as well .as a gain in good sense. That reminds me that Capt. Blanding, the New Soldiers’ Home trustee has been making a fool of himself with the President. He is reported by telegraph as urging that gentleman to visit this Coast to give Democrats a shance to shake hands with him! How long has it been since Presidents, as such, were the exclusive property of any party? We have had several Presidents visit this Coast, and there has been. no distinction of party in their reception, as there should be none attempted in receiving Cleveland. Republicans have been more ready to vive credit to Cleveland for doing his bestto make a good President than the Democrats, many of whom growl and swear at-him and his policy that -eaves them out of the enjoyment ol the spoils. But, however that be, the President is common property, and to be received as such by all citizens, out of due lionor to the office. If a Democratic ring is to be formed around sewers, man) Cleveland if he comes .here, to -keep . ’ Republicans at bay, it will ouly neea that the faect_be announeed. _ ‘The guard won’t need to be very numerous or vigilant when it isknown to Réepublicans that the purpose of the President is to enjoy the exclusive greeting» of his own’ party. < By the way, what did Blanding mean by promising Cleve land good fishing here? Our Coast has many attractions, but fishing is not eminent among them, A considerable number of contempt cases are pending in the United States Circuit Court against hydraulic miners for working claims, Rhodes, Barstow and Hart are usually against the: miners and Sargent & Stone for them. The question is now pending whether, where a restrained miner leases his claim and the lessee works it, the latter not having been a party defendant in the injunction suit, he 18 guilty of contempt! for so doing. This question arises in a Dutch Flat case, and is beingargued on briefs by the above named lawyers. 1 am promised early intelligence of the result and will post you us to the decision. : A handsome wedding took place in this eity yesterday, by which Miss Hattie A. Urocker, daughter of Chas. Crocker, the railroad magnate, became Mra. Alexaniler.
