Do Se Eo ah rey Cae wee THE TRANSCRIPT. Bstablished Sept. 6, 1860, by Nat. P. Brown & Co. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA CO., CALIFORNIA BROWN & CALKINS. Proprietors THURSOAY...... NOV. 18, 1897 HE HAS NO CASE. The District Attorney of Ormsby county, in the State of Nevada, announces that he will prosecute young Guinan of Carson for shooting Attormey General Jones, despite the fact that three-fourths of the Grand Jury after investigating the case decided to let the boy go scot free by ignoring the charge against him. The District Attorney will show his unfitness for the office he holds if. he persists in his deSherman Talks of His “Bummers.” General Horace Porter in his ‘“‘Campaigning With Grant’’ in The Centary tells of the meeting of Sherman and Grant at City Point, where: the former gave an account of his famous march to the sea. Gencral Porter says: Sherman thea went on to talk about his famous ‘‘bummiers,’’ saying: ‘‘They are not stragglers or mere self constituted foragers, as many have been led to suppose, but they are organized for a very usefu} purpose from the adveniuron spirits who are always found in the ranks. They serve as ‘feelers,’ who keep in advance and on the-flanks of the main columns, spy out the land and’ tiscover where the best supplies are to be found. They are indispensable in “feeding troops when compelled, like my urmy, to live off the country and in destroying the enemy’s ‘communications. The bummers are in fact a regular institution. 1 was amused at what one of Schofield’s officers told me at Goldsboro. He said Schofield’s army was maintaining a telegraph line to keep up commnunication with the seacoast, and that one . termination to-try the-case. There is+-of my ‘men; “who wass little more *preno possible chance for conviction. Jones had long been notorious as a woman-chaser. Miss Guinan was doubtless a silly and weak female, and it was her father’s duty to protect her from her own weaknesses and from the influences of a roue like Jones. The latter had been repeatedly warned by the old wian to cease exercising his baleful influences over his victim, but he: set the warnings at defiance and kept up his lascivious relations with her. He not only did all this, but threatened the father with personal injury if he persisted in interfering between him and his prey. The son of the Doctor realized the situation. He had a moral right to kill Jones, not only to protect his father’s life, but because of the shame Jones had put upon his sister and the fainily. Thus the world looks at such things, and the District Attorney and all the machinery of the law cannot make any jury see it in any other light. THE EXAMINER’S MOTIVE. © The San Francisco Examiner continues to:pour hot shot into C. P. Huntington, but its frothy artieles lose all their effect with the people when they know (because the charge has been made time and again and never denied by the Examiner) that that paper signed an agreement with the Railroad Company ‘to play fair towards the. corporation for $30,000: The Examiner acted in bad faith while receiving $22,000 of the money, and the Railroad Company refused to pay the balance of _ $8,000. Now the Examiner devotes a few columns of billingsgate every day to even up for the time it lost when it was receiving the $22,000 and to get even on the loss of $8,000. No sane man gives any weight to anything the Examiner may say against the Railroad after this exposure. Toe great business improvement which the country has seen since last July, is due largely tothe feeling among merchants and business men that the new tariff will furnish both protection and revenue sufficient to run the Government. This simple restoration of confidence has brought forth millions of dollars and given employment to thousands of hands at improved wages. It .has caused unused chimneys to pour forth black smoke and idle wheels to revolve merrily. The new tariff is in operation,.and its revenues are constantly increasing month by month and week by week. Yet it is to be expected the Democrats will say, that the ~ Dingley law has nothing to do with the improvement. Mr. Bryan declaredthat he didn’t see any evidence of prosperity’ while in Ohio. Probably the smoke of reopened factories injured bis eyesight while in the State. Rarkoap earnings are at a high figure, and the bank clearances of the country were 22.2 percent. higher last week than in the corresponding week of last year. Wirs two Republican Senators and a Republican delegation in the House, the old State of Maryland will not be able to recognize herself in the political mirror. — Tue farmers of Ohio, Iowa, Maryland, Kansas, and South Dakota showed by their votes in the recent election that free silver has no more charms for them. ig ees —_—_———e “Javever found a medicine that hit my ease like Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Several hundred turkeys will be raf_ fled at Glenbrook Saloon, commencing this evening, and continuing every evening until they are disposed of. tf vious’ than the rest and was far in advance of my army, was seen up a telegraph pole hacking away at the wire With a hatchet. The officer yelled out to him; ‘What are you doing there? You’re destroying one of our own telegraph lines.’ The man cast an indignant look at his questioner and said as he continued his work of destructign, ‘*I’m one o’ Billy Sherman’s bummers, and the last thing he said to us when we started ont on this hunt was, ‘‘Be sure and cut all the telegraph wires \you come across’ and don’t go to foolin away time. askin who they belong to. 39392 General Debility and Loss of Flesh readily admit that obtain results from it that cannot from any other saan g food. are man preparations on the pres ds that pretend ' gcorT’s "EMULSION. fail — pletll to perform it.
