Score of Five to Nothing
At Glenbrook Park yesterday afternoon a large crowd of people, including quite a number of ladies, witnessed
the fastest game of bootball ever played
in this county.
Grass Valley were about evenly represented by spectators and each team
had a good number of “rooters,” The
game was between a team from this
city and a team from Grass Valley.
The Grass Valley eleven was made up
of considerably larger players but both
teams were about equal in the knowledge of the game.
twenty minutes each and ten minutes
rest was played. Dennis of this city
and Jones of Grass Valley alternated
as umpire and referee.
In the first half the county seat boys
appeared to be nervous, which is accounted for by the fact that their regular center, Herbert Conaway, had the
practicing in the
morning, to badly sprain one of his
wrists and therefore had to be substituted by John Bond, who was to have
played guard. Dave Hooper of the Nevadas made a phenominal sixty-yard
run and several of the Grass Valleyans
made excellent plays.
In the second half things began to
get warm and both sides played in
much more earnest and in a manner
which showed that they hud practiced
faithfully. Howard Conaway, a6 right
half,defended his position very cleverly
and made several good plays
three minu‘es before time for the game
to be stopped, the Nevsdans lost the
ballon the Grass Valleyan’s ten-yard
line and the latter attempted to kick,
bat were biocked by Bargess, the star
player of the game, who forced the ball
to the Grass Valiey goal line, where he
fell ‘on it. The umpire called ita touch
down and the decisicn caused considerable discussion, but by referring to
the rules it was fouad he was right.
The Nevada Citys made five points but
their opponents were unabie to score.
The very best of good feeling exiated
between the members of both teams
allthrough the gsme and the losing
team took their defeat g vod naluredly,
with the hope of being victorious when
they play again on Thanksgiving. Day.
Following is the line up
