nine o’clock last evening. It continued
most of the night and a good part of
today. At nine o'clock this morning
‘an inch and three-quarters had fallen
and about a quarter of an inch has
been added since then.
At Lake Fordyce eight inches of snow
fell during the night, and in Bear
Valley and as far down as Quaker Hill
it was snowing this morning ata lively:
rate. The barometer took a slight rise
during the forenoon but did not. go
above the storm level. The thermometer has been falling since early morning. i

part of the month, and were notified
by the South Yuba Water Company a

Chief Engineer Hook of the local fire
department tells of the little town of
Nasco; in Sweden,;—which has a female
contingent, 150 stropg, in its fire brigale. The water supply of the yillage
consists simply of four great tubs, and
it is the duty of the women “firemen”
to keep these full in case of fire. They
stand in two continuous lines from the
tubs to a lake some distance away, one
the other sending them back.

A Cheering Weather Prediction.
A Broad street business man who always thinks twice before he speaks once
says that there.is every indication ofa
wet Winter. The early arrival of the
wild fowl from the north, the conditions
reported in the Arctic zone and the
trend of the air-currents are all declared to be portentous of an abundant
water supply for mining purposes.

big estimate, two miles more; the intermission strolls and the trips to the

total, eleven and one-half miles.
The War Stamp Decision.
Tuternal Revenue Collector Lynch at
San Francisco has received fom Washid®ton a decision to the effect that a
receipt given to a bank by a person to
whom the bank is indebred las a depositor or otherwise, or for whom it holds
funds, is no moré subject to a stamp
than a receipt given for any other debt
or demand; but if he issued his receipt
to another person todraw upon his
deposit to the amount of it; then it
loses the character of a receipt and become a check or draft and is subject to
tax. :

that nearly all of the persons who invested their money in that institution
knew nothing about the business, and

creameries have been paying property
“. a8 Soon asthe proper supply of milk
could be obtained, but in Batte county
the three creameries have been dismal
failures, the fault of management and
not of land, for there is nota county in
the State that can produce more feed
for stock to the acre’than Butte. ‘
Now is an excellent time for those
who have stock in the creamery association to import some one to take the
creamery ata low rental, ring in milch
cows and start it going.
There was built last Spring in Penn
Valley, this eoun y, as fine a creamery
as there ig ofits size anywhere. It is
cwned an . controlled by practical farm€t8 aid business men of Penn Valley,
Nevada City and Grass Valley. It has
capacity to handle the milk of some
‘three hundred cows. It-is in the center
of one of the best hay raising sections
of the State. The farmers who live in
Penn and Pleasant Valleys, which comprise the district contiguous to it, have
already some 200 or more milch cows
aud propose by next Spring to have
early if not quite as many more.
Aboat the first of April next the creamery will be set in fall operation with a
first-class man of experience at the
head of it. Messrs. Dikeman, Davey
and the other farmers down there are
satisfied thaf@the enterprise will prove
ever expected of it.
The Willows Promoter says on this
subject of creameries: ;
We haveacreamery at Willows, plant
all paid for, which is not now, nor
‘will it ever unless we make a move in
the right direction, do us any good.
With but little exertion on our part we
can make this a paying investment, The
time of a year is now upon us when
ground should be prepared to receive
alfalfa seed, and alfalfa is all that we
need to start up our creamery. We
know of one man who will sow sixty
acres Of this forage within a short distance of town and others should be induced to follow his example. Experence has demonstrated that nearly all
our lands will bring good crops of this
feed even ina drought'year, and that
the erop is a paying one. 3
The creamery business is all right
when it is properly undertaken. Had
we procured our feed and cows first
and them built our creamery the plant
would have never stood idle. In other
towns the money that this enterprise
brings in is found to be of great benefit.
To show what it does for Woodland we
clip the following from the Democrat,
