NEVADA City Dairy TRANSCRIPT NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED HE. BROWN, Manager. ee A TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION Oyfen, =~ + + $6 Per Year. By Carrier, fs . Delivered toany part uf the city. —— 12 1o2¢ Per Week Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City coteecsocceveceves-NOVOmbDOr 19, 1903 THE SLEEPLESS LE OF OUR CITY BRETHREN HILE as a people we Americans would be quick to resent any imputation that we are a race of weak~ lings, it is unquestionably true that there is something about us which keeps medical experts continually busy trying to diagnose the national disease. Some say we area race of dyspeptics and others say we are a nervous, high strung breed of gamblers who are going mad. There are various other primary theories as to what is the matter with us, and then there are secondary theories put forth to sustain the originals. The latest doctrine is that as a people we do not sleep _ enough. It is even intimated that in most of our cities a _ large number of persons do not get any genuine sleep at all, for the rattle and bang, the jar and the whirr, going on day and night, reach the bedrooms of the masses and by disturbing the nerves prevent thorough restfulness even when sleep is soundest. It is alleged that the increase of insanity and of various kinds of mania is due mainly to the lack of good and sufficient sleep. One authority asserts thst unless in some way . a stop can be put to the increasing noisiness of our cities the people will eventually become a nation of lunatics, or at least approximate it to such an extent that our lunatic asylums will become the most important of our state structures, and prudent legislators will be liberal in appropriations for them because each will perceive that he himself may be ere long removed from the capitol to the asylum amid the applause of taxpayers, It is strange that any well educated race of people should have to be advised to sleep more. One would suppose that every man and woman of culture would understand the benefits of late sleeping and practice it to the fullest extent possible. The experts who are crying out against city people for their lack of Sleep say they are living an unnatural life, which is probably true. Still the average American will hesitate to believe that his fellow-countrymen are as sleepless and insane a lot as the experts declare. We live longer than our fathers. Infant mortality has diminished greatly in the last fifty years. Many diseases have been well nigh eradicated or rendered comparatively harmless, Our noisy{cities are healthier than were the quieter cities of old, and if people do not sleep quite enough it would seem that their ancestors must have slept altogether too much, for the present generation have improved upon their conditions. When all is said, , however, it-will do no one any harm to follow the advice of ~ the new teachers and sleep as much as one can; for there are many men who are better citizens when asleep than at any time. Here in our peaceful city in the Sierra Nevadas our people are doubly blessed in the enjoyment of that great boon— restful and sufficient sleep, which fact doubtless accounts for the contented, happy and youthful appearance of all onr people. And this is one reason why our citizens feel exceedingly grateful and for which they will render special thanksgiving one week from today. Miners’ Association The Miners’ Association in convention yesterday at San Francisco discuesed the bydraulic question, when the report of the committee on resolutions was presented. The report condemned the action of the Anti-Debris Association in institating suits against holders of hydrulic mining licenses. Grove L. Johnson, as the representative of the Chamber of Commerce, endeavored to have that section of the report etricken out, Oonsiderable discussion followed, and William Nieholls Jr., of Dutch Flat, stated that Truckee News. From yesterday’s Republican, Deputy Constable Ocker arrested a crazy man Saturday afternoon. His name is James Williame and he is a Prominent grocer of Chicago, Mr, Williams was en route to his home from a trip to some of the Western cities and the high altitude of the mountains unbalanced him mentally, When the train arrived here he jumped off minus his shoes, hat and shoes, and was wandering about town when the Constable took bim in charge. He is the Anti-Debris Association is not honest in its intentions, and ‘that it had by every means tried to bring trouble to the small miner, while overlooking the larger one. No single miner could successfully fight the opposing forces, and he urged the Asso ciation to back up every assailed individual, for the time would come when others beside the hydraulickers would be called to defend themselvee on the question of the disposal of the debris. The convention unanimously voted in favor of the committee’s report, and also adopted a resolution urging appropriations amounting to $1,000,000 to extend the work of building restraining dams.
