The heart is the work-shop of the life, ivery act of the hand becomes moral because the heart stamps that act with motives, The heart determines the moral character of all you consciously do, and in the particular act, The heart must be kept, it won’t keep itself. It must be presided over by the will, commanded, ordered, controlled. If one leaves it to follow impulse and moods it will deteriorate in itself and contaminate-the very citadel it dwells in, Keep it as you keep a garden—by destroying the weeds and-fostering the seed.— Rev, J. H, Hartman, Baptist, Cleveland; 2-0 Death. Life is always interesting. Death is much more so. The deathbed is the dial’ of life from which we reckon the past and the future, As we are worshipped in life we will be watched in death, All is finished. Redemption is accomplished, the atonement is complete. Heaven is triumphant ; hell is confounded, All that the world has waited tor, longed for, needed, is realized ; ‘all is yours, dying saint ;.all may be yours, dying sinner. — Kev, John Allwon, ' Reformed church, Yonkers, N. CASWELL. :To Mark His Election as Sovereign The San Francisé. Call has the follow; ‘Ing concerning a former. resident of Nevada City, and who all our: old residents Thomas Howard Caswell of this city, who elected Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council of the Southern Jurisdiction (mother council of the from election tuok place, will be tendered the most elaborate reception’ ever given by the order His office is the highest position’ in Masonry in the world, and ‘this fact, tohas resulted in great ,preparations being County Will Lessen Crime. the best investments the county ever made. of great. benefit in helping to rin down criminals, jhas in his keéping a man-trailing dog will be sufficient to deter many hard characters ) and ex-convicts away, If the county had procured one or more bloodiiounds long ago, we! believe less robbers and other high crimes would have been committed in this county, Arthur Meyer, the stage driver, would probably not have been killed by a highwayman, nor would Dennis Scanlon, the railroad section man, have been murdered at Hill’s Flat, or would Galivotti have been-slain, or other murders oceurred that have within the past ten or fifteen years stained the pages of our coutty’s history. Fear of {detection and. the. consequent punishment deters many from committing crimes, The rough and mountainous char— acter of the greater part of Nevada county renders the escape of assassins and highwaymen comparatively easy, unless the fugitives are trailed through the hills: and gorges by dogs trained for that purpose. The knowledge of this, condition ‘of things has for years caused Nevada and other mountain counties to be the special tield of stage robbers and other highwaymen. The final capture and conviction of the stage robbers, Dorsey and-Patterson, who-murdered banker: Cummings, had the effect. to keep road agents away from this section for awhile, When it is generally known that the county keeps a. biocdhound or two for tracking criminals, this element will be very apt. to give this section a wide berth, ER a ae Killed a Cub. We mentioned yesterday that Captain Henry Richards killed a bear in New York canyén the day before, and said that the Captain could get a bear almost any time he wanted. Yesterday he went out in the vicinity where he killed the old bear, and succeeded in killing a young cub, which when dressed weighed about thirty pounds, The youngster was given to. the men at Marsh’s sawmill. The old male bear that roams about in that neighborhood will probfrom his track, which measures six inches across, he must be a big fellow. ee eee se THe Pror.e -Bettnve what they read
