The farce-comedy to be given at
the Theater on Friday evening, the
29\h inet., abounds with fan and
mimicry. All the players are well up
in their parte, and when they appear
before the footlights the audience will
be astonished at the display of home
talent that will be made. “Oaptain
Racket” consists of three acts, and
there will not be a dull moment from
the opening until the close of the play.:
The Empire State quartette will be
at their best, and other special features will be introduced. As heretofore announced, the net receipts of
the entertainment will be used for a
very worthy cause, namely, the establishment of a free reading room in our
city. The Theater ought to be filled
to overflowing on the occasion, and
we believe that such will be the caee.

A Good Motto.
Fred Badger’s newspaper motto is:
“Lie, steal, drink and swear.” When
you lie, let it be down to pleasant

swear, let it be that you will patronize
your home paper, pay your subscription, and not send your job work away
from home.

Complicaied Case.
New York, Nov. 19th—Mail advices
from Natal to the London Times and
the New York Times say te problem
in South Africa isa complicated one,
and cannot be grasped by readers of
newspapers. The correspondent says
the British must.be made to understand that they have to deal with a peculiar people, whose very elementary
education has been directed by. their
unscrupulous and ambitious and anreliable leaders to imbuing them with
the belief that, as the chosen people of
God, they are called to the Dominion
of South Africa. They are taught
that the amalekite Britieher is to be
driven into the sea, leaving them the
blacks as their hewers of wood and
drawers of water, as in the days of
the great trek. In Natal the people
are thorougbly reliable, or thorough
rebels, but in Cape Colony, thousands
of Afrikanders are on the fence.—
There has been too much sentimental
humbug, declares the correspondent,
Hoe insists that the inbabitants must
be thoroughly “smashed” and made
to feel that they are “smashed” for the
sake of the future quiet of South Africa, Then will be the time for the
British to be generous. After peace
comes the burghers can be handled
easily, if the scales of justice are evenly held.

A plan of four ptatibes to break out
of the county jail at San Jose has just
come to light and had it not-been discovered just when it was it is more
‘than probable that within a few days
some.of the most vicious criminals in
this State would have been at large, The
four who did the planning were George
Suesser, now awaiting sentence of
death; Jan J ohn, sentenced’ to ten
years in San Quentin for perjury;
Frank Johnson, an ex-convict, and a
man named Curtis. They secured a
;. flat steel rod from the shoe of a crip-. ple named Bowman, doing time for
vagroncy, made a saw of it and iutended to cut a hole in the, tank in
which they were confined, escape to the
roof, and, with ropes made of blankets,
reach the bottom and escape. A esearch
of their celle revealed the saw and
the blanket ropes, The men are now
in solitary confinement. Suesser, who
was the leader, is the murderer of
Sheriff Henry Farley of Salinas county, who was raised at this city.
