_ NEvADA Bri Dan TRaNscriPT. ( NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor, cae TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION SyTah, $6 Per Year . By Carrier, ° ‘Delivered to any part uf the city. Issued ald ries Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City PRIORY; -— WHEN A MAN IS DOWN EVERYBODY KICKS HIM “HERE is something of the snob and something of the ingrate in human nature, and when a man loses money and position he loses most of his friends, Why this shonld be it is hard to say, and that it should not be is easy to prove; but that it is, is a fact. A friend in adversity is as rare as he is valuable; So long as a man is prosperous, respected and out of trouble he may have any number of friends. . They will come to every feast he’ spreads, as they.were to the feasts of Timon, and they will speak “his praises in every quarter. They will slap him on the back. fora jolly fellow and will rally rouud him if he goes into politics, business or society. They will give feasts in his homor, too, and will spend their means in surfeiting him who, has already enough. But let him lose his money ‘and his grip on life and he will stretch out his hands in vain for help. The jovial blades who dined so often at his table will put their hands over pockets when he appeals for a loan, and after the first borrowing visit will be‘out when he calls. The pleasant ladies who tead and luncheoned and visited his wife in his days of success will fail to see her in his time of distress. Not only will his friends decline to boost a falling man, but as soon as he reels backward they will give him a push downward, and when he : is down they will kick him. If he applies for a position and gives the names of any of his friends for reference, the friends, when applied to, will damn him with a sour, ill-favored recommendation. Failure is the unpardonable sin, and the man who has failed becomes, practically, an outcast, On the other hand, the man who has succeeded, no matter by what means, will be admired. This instinctive respect for the successful man and dis regard of the man who has failed seems to be a patt of the human make-up. Everybody feels it in some degree. Ifa well-fed; thriving man in a frock coat and tall hat, carrying a cane walks into an office whére he is unknown, he will be treated with courtesy and deference, whereas a shabby, needy looking man is sure of being treated with familiarity if not. with disdain, Even the best of us will betray this instinct in small ways, for it is bred in the bone of the human race. We will show a rich man to the door 4nd will keep our seat when a poor man goes out. our ante-room and will have a rich man ushered in ahead of him. Let any man who doubts his weakness in this regard ask himself whether he would show as much attention to an applicant for employment as he would show to J. Pierpont Morgan. The instinct is bred'in the bone of the human race. And yet—not to end too cynically—there is such a thing asa friend in adversity. He. is one out of a hundred and he is sometimes not the one on whom the most reliance was placed or from whom much could be expected, but he does exist. Once having found him out, grapple him with hooks of steel, for no man in his lifetime ever has. more than two or three such friends. Personal Noles. 12 1-2c Per Week sncveces.
