MONG the many improvements which have been made to the City of Nevada during recent years and in which our people take great pride is its up-to-date lighting system. For a town of its size this city is, as well lighted as any on the Coast and better lighted than the great majerity of interior places. Our people do have to turn their recollection back very many years to member than when going off the main business streets to other parts of the town it was necessary to take a lantern in order to get around the dark corners without endangerifig life and.Jimb by an accidental misstep in @ hole in the sid¢walk or the tilting of a broken board. But now a persot can see to get around fairly well on the darkest night in nearly every section of our city, but there is still room for improvement as there are yet a few dark sections which should be illuminated, and our accommodating and: active Board of Trustees and other city officials have not been slow to realize this fact and will shortly have the defects in the lighting system remedied. : At last night’s session of the Board of Trustees there was some discussion on this matter which was followed by ot in the town, and strangers as well. The chairman of the light committee was instructed to have the additional electric lights, which was designated to be installed some time ago, put in place as soon as possible. This will mean the addition of a number of new lights which will increase the total number in the city service to 110 incandescent and 9 arc light. cation$ where they-will do the most good. There are many dark streets where they ean be used to advantage, and if it is found that these new additional lights are inadequate to give the satisfaction desired, more will doubtless be added, as the present Board of Trustees are determined to please the people and look after their interests. { ¥ . to onlookers en route, for contributions. a The new lights will be distributed and placed in-lo-. The “Monks” wore long ate gowns and flowing beards, Wm.-Rowe, grotesquely Stein as “Happy Hooligan” and Harry Rogers asa policeman, in full aniform, were in line also, and performed their part of the program well. ; The Benevolent and Protective O der of Elks tarned out in goodly numbers. and all carried American flags. Following ‘the Elke came a large number of grocery and other local delivery teams loaded down with groceries, provisions, wood, etc., which school house by a committee of the Benevolent Society. A large supply of useful articles donated by eur townspeople ware taken direct to the Committee’s headquarters and were not in the parade. After traveling the line of march outs lined, the parade disbanded in front of Armory Hall and jhe-’donations were taken to the lar; nt. store room in the Masonic, Moh, witagd the committee will aseget-and distribute them to the needy. é The proce largest of its carseat Mery Oity and co) ely encircled the™dlock. A large crowd of peoplé gathered on the‘ various streets and watched with great interest the parade and cheered it. ded a ~ eed in ATmory Hall, ahece an ini pidetae program of exercises were rendered and appropriate speeches made. Insignias containing the words “Help the Poor” were’ cafried by the Elks, echoolchildren and. others. hs stores in town did not close as was announced, the Committee deciding that it would interfere with many people in securing their desired donations. The storekeepers were on the outside, however, when the parade came in sight and responded nobly when the contribution boxes came along. $ Exposed Himself. Word was brought totown this afternoon, that a man was out in the cedar trees on Proepect Hill behaving inan indecent manner, by exposing himself to the passers-by and the residents of the neighborhood. Marshal Sbearer and Constable Dillon went out after the man, who is supposed to be either drank or crazy. The officers foand him and brought him to town and placed him in the clty prison. His name is E, B. Oonnolly, anid is collector for the International Correspondence School. of Scranfon, Pennsylvania, He’ is” well ‘dressed and had $30 in his pockets. aioe she De recien disba With a complete lighting system the ‘comfort and convenience of our citizens will be Subserved and the good repu~ tation of our city in general with strangers and visitors will be maintained. The people of Nevada City should congratulate themselves that they have such an efficient and progressive board of city officials. 4444444844644 4686 LIBERAL DONATIONS. Are You Going East.
