ROOSEVELT ON HONESTY
T is hard to understand why
Washington was stirred
up over the President’s
sermon on honesty preached at
the centennial celebration of
the New York Avenue Church,
recently, The telegrams said
that the national capital was
in a state of excitement: over
the presidential uttterances,
but perhaps the correspondents exaggerated the interest.
The statements made by the
President were merely a repe—.
tition of those which he has
been making ever since his elevation to his present high position, and even before. The
be imagined for them .is that
only new significance that can
they were made with special
reference to possible prosecutions of suspected officials; and
there seems no’ particular reason for giving to them such
meaning.
Roosevelt has always preached honesty—honesty i in private life and in public office. When he said,“And remember,
that while the public servant, the legislative, the executive
offices, the judge, are not to be excnsed if they fall short of
their duties, yet that their doing their duty cannot avail
unless you do yours,” he was-merely saying again in a new
form what he has often:said before. Nor, when he enlarged
on the need of having honest men in the jury box was he
uttering a new thought. If auy one be made uneasy by such
statements, and if Washington be excited over them, a large
number of people dwelling in
have uneasy consciences.

MRS. DOSTON DEAD
A Well-Known Pioneer
Woman Passes Away
This Afternoon.
Mrs. Elizabeth Poston, an old residents of this city and mother of George
and Vernon Poston, answered Death’s
summons at about 2 o’clock this afternoon, and her noble soul passed peacefully away to ite final reward. She
had lived to a ripe, old age, but for
many years hes been an invalid and a
great sufferer from .a complication of
diseases; so death to her was a happy
‘relief from earthly pain and trials.
Daring the long illness which she ex~
perienced she always maintained her
+usaal happy and cheerful disposition
and bore her affliction with remarkable patience and fortitude:
Mrs. Poston came to Nevada City
in July (1859 with her husband, now
deceased, and for many years they
made their home on a ranch,’a few
miles west of town, For ‘several years
past she has resided with her son
Vernon, on Coyote street,
In her younger days Mrs. Poston
was possessed of a strong and brilliant
intellect, and even up to a comparatively short time ago could recall and
recite many interesting and thrilling
incidents connected with the early history of this section. She was well
known and esteemed by all the pioneers
of this vicinity, and many will regret
to learn .of.the death of this good
women.
The deceased was 78 years of age
.and a native of South Carolina. “Besides her two sons above named, she
leaves a daughter, Mrs. Chas. Faller of
Ferndale, Humboldt county, and a
sister who resides in Oakland. °
