Mrs. Peet’s lecture was Nevada City Lodge, A: O. U. W., last _____Last Night’s Lecture, } MURDER AT DAVISVILLE. County, the Assassin. Charles Dodge, who was born and raised at Forest Springs in this county, shot and killed H. M. Eaton at Davisville Tuesday night. Eaton was about twenty-five years old and was employed as night telegraph operator by the Southern Pacitic Company. Dodge, armed with a revolver, waited outside the depot for Eaton to appear. As the latter came out the door Dodge arose and shot him in the abdomen, the bullet ranging upward, After being shot Eaton ran about. 100 feet, and then fell. He was carried’ into the Lillard House-and Dr, Bates sent for, but before he arrived Eaton was dead. He never spoke after the shot was fired.,.. wonian, a sister of Dodge, who was divorced from her husband and came to Davisville from the Kast a short time ago, to reside with her brother. She soon formed an attachnient for Eaton and. it is said their relations were quite intimate. The woman is known in Davisville as Miss Dodge. She has been sick in bed six wecks and at one time it was thought she cewld not live. —Charley Dodge isiknown to many of our. people. He is quite a character, and although naturally a very bright fellow he has of late years developed into a veritable crank. Several years ago he set himself up asa lightning calculator and visited this city in that capacity, offering fer sale a little pamphlet on short methods of calculating interest and other mathematical and strong argument as she arraigned King Alcohol, as a prisoner at the bar of justice, the audience being the court and jury. Buckley, a-mining expert of San Francisco who has-been at Washington examining some mines, arrived here today on his way home. é: James Hustler of Cherokee is a very sick man. He has been sick’ for some time but got better. -A few days ago he had a relapse and is now very low. 2 Geo. W, Ray came over to the county seat today. He will leave on Sunday for Josephine county, Oregon, where he w ll resume work in his hydraulic mine at that gist’s eleventh report, sent to us with the eralogist. The report is very complete. Nineteen pages of the work are devoted to a description ef the mines of this district, The brick building owned by Mrs. J. C. Dickerman, opposite the Court Hense, is being fitted up for a law office. We understand it-has been rented by an attorney who is soon to locate here. W. F. Englebright contemplates building a new residence next season, one that. will compare favorably with any of the fine dwellings erected here this season. Miss Pauline Cohn has been presented by Evangeline Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, with a Past Matron’s jewel. The jewel was manufactured by C. J. Brand and
is a handsome piece of work. Goyne’s orchestra has been engaged to furnish the music at the Thanksgiving ball next week. William George of Grass Valley bought the horses for $209, and Conrad Grissell’ bought the oxen for $132. eS eis oS WEDDING BELLS. ae Marriage of One of Grass Valley’s Popular Young Ladies. Miss Elizabeth Adele, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Fletcher of Grass Valley, was united in marriage last night with Charles T. Lindsey of Visalia, The wedding took place at the home of the bride’s parents, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Father Greeley, Miss Agnes Fletcher was the maid of honor, Miss Lena Hanson the bridesmaid, and G; H. Fletcher groomsman. : The bride was attired in elegant white pearl :bengaline and chantilly lace, with natural flowers, and wore in her hair a beautifal diamond hairpin,. the gift of the groom, Miss Hanson, the bridesmaid, wore a costume of pale yellow crepe de Chine, Miss Fletcher, the maid of honor, wore blue crepe ala Francaise with honiton lace. The house was beautifully decerated with chrysanthemums smilax and ferns. Following the ceremony a sumptuous supper was served. The newly married couple left by special train at 1:30 A. m., carrying with them the best wishes of a host of friends. Mr. Lindsey is station agent at Visalia and owns a large orchard and vineyard near there. He is highly esteemed by all who know him. ~ A Rich Strike. We learn that avery rich strike was made in the Pennsylvania quartz mine at Grass Valley this morning. There is a large body of ore and it is said to be remarkably rich. place, “__ co .
