Epiror Transcrirt: There is a‘ question now pending in California which is of the gravest importance t6 the entire State, I refer to the efforts that. are. being made te briug the next National Rejublican Con= vention to San Francisco. ' The thatner in which this question has been agitated, the mass meetings that have beeu held, the streiuous efforts of statesmen, politicians and business men, irrespective of party, , to secure to San Feancisev, and thereby to the State at large, the next convention of the Republican party are now historical facts and need no ‘elaboration here. My object in writing is of a different character, Whileit is true that the metropolis of the State would experiénce the greatest of the benefits to be derived from the as}sembling of such ‘a. convention “within its precincts, it is also true that the other and the State would derive their pro rata of the benefits. There 1s nO section of ‘the State that would not be benefited by such an enterprise. less favored sections of San Francisco would undoubtedly be recouped tenfold financially for the expense incurred, but the object of the interior has an aspect that does not savor of present financial gain. There are industrial reasons for the securing on the part of the interior towns and cities of this convention, ‘he southern towns, realizing this fact and the great benetits to be derived therefrom, have been foremost in abetting the metropolis in its admirable They have and financial support in a manner characteristic of their éfforts in all worthy projects. But the northern: part of the State has been exceedingly tardy and negligent in taking action on this, important—matter, and if industrial and financial loss occurs as a result it will have only itself to blame. object. rendered both moral The benefits that will accrue from the holding of such a convention in this State are innumerable and inestimable. The best brains and influence of the party are delegated to the National Convention, And these men include some of the most prominent in the country. They are wealth, intelligence and influence. It would be a distinguished favor to any community to have the friendly interest of such an important body of men, Independent of their own business experience and financial. influence, they would prove a valuable medium through which: to advertise in the East and South the wonderful rescurces of this State. In this way the northern section would receive the greatest pro rata men of of benefit because of its contiguity to San The only inducemeut the south could offer would be its agricultural, horWe do not wish to belittle these important foctors in the development of the State, but it should be remembered that.ia the Eastern, Middle and Northwestern States, agriculture is a staple industry, while in the Southern States horticulture and viticulture are predominating industries, Therefore these things will not be new to the distinguished visitors and it will only be a question in their minds whether these pursuits can be more profitably followed here than elsewhere. But the northern part. of the State will have a different inducement to offer, Tn the Sierra range of mountains and in the foothills are to be found deposits of gold unequalled in the world, Francisco, ticultural and viticultural. industries, Their value ean‘not be approximated by the most competent of experts. tible, in developing: some of the most valuable They are apparently inexhausTney have uever been instrumental and permanent god mines known to history. A public meeting should be called by the representatives of the Committee of this county immediately, and there should be no hesitation in giving moral ‘and financial support to such a worthy object, Mr, Neff has already issued a call for a public meeting in Placer county and it really does seem humiliating that grand old Nevada should play seeond fiddle to little Placer. The boy loves bia senate probably more than he does his father, but so far as relates to the afiairs of lve in general and on its hard side, he.has ten times the contidence in his father’s practical and available wisdem than he ‘has in that of his mother. And if his father finds it necessary. in the conduct of business to strain one or two. of the commandments the boy will keep on repeating the commandments to hismother and commence breaking ‘them with his father, and that, too, without feeling that the sinuosity of the proceduré involves any great amount of inconsistency, * .* * The only thing that will save the boy and hold him in such a way true to the fixed pole of rectitude that-no consideration of place or circumstance, can. deflect him is that he be under the domain of a father whose life in the midst of the world incarnates the principles learned from the mother The boy will beheve in the feasibility of his mother’s doctrine of righteousness if he sees his father take it out and exemplify it under the stress of business. The father’s life to this decree. measures the power of. the mother’s tuition, and is as the hand ‘of God hastening or postponing the fulfillment of her maternal longings and prayers for the children of the household, — Charles H. Parkhurst, D. D., in November Ladies’ Home Journal, Heard From. A letter was received here today from Rev, J. W. Stump, who was a great many years ago pastor of the Methodist Church at this city, stating that he is still living with his family at Bisbee, Arizona, where hé® is engaged in mining.
