THAT ALL NIGHT mee
The: San Francisco Examiner continues to publish each morning a whole
page of opinions of the people who
travel betweén Oakland and San Francisco,in regard to running boats every
hour during the night. That paper
knows that the project is not feasible.
It simply wants to get even on, Huntington for not: paying the balance of
“that $30,000 hush money. Perhaps it
would have been better for him to have
paid the $8,000, aud then the Examiner
would..not--have--been.se--ferociousagainst the railroad. There is abou!
as much sense in running the boats al'
night as. there would be in the Examiner publishing an edition its usual
size every hour during the night. Ii
the. consensus of the public should
make such a demand “Willie” Hearst’s
business manager would reply: “You
gotothe other place. It would bea loss
to us to do such a thing.’ Our receipts
for.the sale of the paper outside of certain hours would not pay for the oil
used on our machines.” So it would
be in the case of the ferry boats running all night. The boats are run until 12:15 midnight and after that hour
respectable people are supposed to be
in bed, except on some rare special occasions. The Examiner expects to
force the Company to run all night
boats, but if -it-hammers away till
doomsday it will never succeed in its
farcical clamor. It fancies if it could
ac:omplish that it would then go for
the city railroads to run all night,
which they would not do whether there
was.a night boat or not. A great many
of the people who have been delayed
on the overland train, not arriving at
San Francisco until after 12 o’clcck,
were compelled to walk to their hote.s
which are a long distance from the
_ ferry. Soit matters not if there are
night boats, there are no cars running from the depot. What use would
there be in running the boats? Every
sensible person knows that the tirade
is made up wholly of spite, and the Ex,aminer shows its teeth in a ridiculous
manner. Only a short time ago its
columns were filled with slanders
.against the Spreckles family, and tke
latter getting tired of it purchased the
Call and retaliated on the Examiner in
such a truih-telling way that that paper coward-like has sneaked into its
hole and lets the Spreckles family
alone.
CANDIDATES FOR CONGRESS.
There are a number of prominent
gentlemen spoken of as probable candidates for Congress on the Republicau side of the house. Among them
;} are Hon. J. M. Walling of this city,
Frank D. Ryan of Sacramento, Hon.
John R. Davis of Jackson and Senator
Vorhiees of Sutter Creek. The latter is
the only one who has commenced a
contest for the position, and it is said
he intends to make a strong fight for
it. If Judge Walling should consent
to become a candidate, however, there
would hardly be a doubt about his
nomination and election, for no man
stands higher with the rank and flie of
the Republican party in this District
than he. In every position’ he has
filled he has proven himself thoroughly
competent and has been a credit to his
constituents. No man is more thorTIED COWS TO THE TRACK.
Florida Farmee’s Plan to Get Rich by
Beating the Railroads.
The Louisville and Nashville railroad
has retently uncovered a clever but old
fashioned scheme of tobbery which has
puzzled its detectives for two years.
Jackson county, Fla., raises a few cattle, but it isn't a Texas ranch by a great

the Louisville and Nashville. The namber of cows kiiled on that line in thix
county exceeds anything in the history
of the road.
Detective Watts has been looking up
the previous condition of servitude of
these numerous’ valuable sacrifices t
engines and has discovered a plot whick
has cost the company thousands é6f dol
lars. The man who conceived and executed this coup is J.D. i tilly. Hei
an artist. It was Stilly’s idea-to scoui
the country adjoiving the railroad and
buy up all the lume, halt ahd blind cattle to be had.
An old cow is worth about $1.50.
Stilly would purchase these attenuated
creatures and drive them to his farm.
. What he did with. them.the.nei
road people ,began an investigation.
Then Stilly took to theswamps. The
detective discovered that the cows which
the slow Florida trains were killing all
belonged to the tribe of ‘‘has beens,’’
and that in every case in the courts the
deceased milkers were paid for as thoroughbred animals, which are not any
too common in Jackson county.
The detective sought out the man who
could own so many. He discovered a
farm full of cripples, and then he set a
watch on Stilly. A few nights after
that Stilly led a poor old cow down to
the tracks, tied her securely to the cross
ties, and then waited while a through
The usual claim followed, Next. day
Watts went on a hunt for Stilly, found
him in a swamp, and brought him to

Signs,
The melancholy dars are here.
The signs are everywhere.
The woodland leaves are turning-sear
And fiutiering through the air.
The cricket chit ps its mournful lay
Beneath the windew sill.
The buckwheat fleid is turning gray
Upon the distant hill.
A dreamy silence seems to spread
O’er ail the countryside.
The ficwers that bloomed, alas, are dead,
Tneir petals scattered wide.
Bui e’en without such signs as these—
The bilis immersed in haze,
The turning leaves upon the trees—
We'd recs-gnize the days.
For now the agile college ‘‘men,”’
With hanks of hair to spare,
Are on the campuses again
Anda raising hades there.
They're hoistivg flags and rushing canes,
And also hazing some,
And elsewhere showing that their brains
