At 3:30 o’clock this morning an alarm
of fire was turned in from the hotel.)}
A second alarm was turned in five
minuter later, followed by a third.
It is supposéd the conflagration had
its origin on the Ellis street side of the
building. It spread rapidly and inside
of five minutes the entire upper floor
part of the building wherein the Baldwin Theater is situated was also a fiery
furnace, and a plain view of the inte-:
rior was to be had from Market street.
The hotel was filled with guests. In a
short time escape by the stairway was shut off and at many windows
men and women appeared in their
night clothes, calling piteously for
firemen to rescue them. Above them
the entire roof was ablaze, flames leaping high into the heavens. Thousands
of people crowded the streets cheering
the police and firenien as they proceeded in their work of rescuing the
guests.
The widow of: Senator Mahoney was
carried from one of the upper stories
and lowered to the ground in an unconscious condition.
A man by the name~ of Frank Noon
leaped from the fifth story on theMarket
street side to the pavement below,
striking in his descent telegraph wires,
and thus escaping without injury.

Michell the Rain Maker.
Prof. John Michell, the dancing master, is entitled to the thanks and gratitude of our people for bringing a season of rain which’ éverybody was
praying for, but knew not how to produce, Mr. Michell with his usual

a party for Thanksgiving eve which he
at the time knew would cause the
clouds to gather and to give us a
downpour, but would not dampen our
desire for a good time to-night. The
rain in the past week has brought millions of dollars to the State and Nevada county in particular, and itis due
