Refuse to Handle It.
‘ -_“.
Some of the newsdealers in Alifferent parts
‘of the State have refused to handle a certain
vile publication that is issued once a week in
San Francisco, for the reason that it is a
“slanderous sheet, and the sale of which
tends to injure the legitimate business of
the dealers. Carr Bros. of this city were
. about the first to stop keeping the disreputable paper. he crusade against it in this
flirection is growing stronger every day.
Postmaster Calkins of this city has for
some time past been corresponding with the
Superintendent of the Railway Mail Service
with a view of having the paper referred to
excluded from the mails, on the grouuds
that the same is ‘‘scurrilous, scandalous
and defamatory.” Thé Postal Laws and
Regulations are very strict regarding such
things and it is thought that when the matter is investigated the order will be issued
refusing the paper admission to the mails,
This is the niost effeetive manner in which
to suppress the interior circulation ef such

4° YEARS THE STANDARD.
THEIR CHANCE.
An Opportunity for California Miners to Make An Exhibit.
W. S. Chapman, who is thoroughly familiar with the mines and mining interests
of the coast, in speaking of the coming Midwinter Fair says :
Miners should hail this -as the first and
». greatest Opportunity they have ever had
since California has been organized te ex-.
hibit her great resources.
Ne such! opportunity have they ever had
fer exhibiting to the peeple of the Eastern
and all the States some idea of the possibilities of California as a mining State,
In thé early history ef California our gold
product was so large as to alarm many péople for fear it might become valueless as
money and the question of demonetizing gold
was seriously discussed by the same class
of people, who have since made such a raid
upon silver, and the time being rendered it
valueless as money, and now we have ene
standard of value only, and that is gold,
Then, what should miners do ? Why should
not every man in Ualifornia exert himself to
produce the only metallic money now recog—
uized as such by any existing law?
I believe that every miner and every business mand State will, when he fully
pe condition into which we
are so strangely thrown, do everything in
his power to promote the development of
our gold mines, Few people have any conception of the vast extent of our gold resources,
I have be ed by one of eur pioneers
within a wee t if I thought there was
still remaining in the mountains as much
gold as we have already taken out. Iam
satisfled that we as yet know but little of
the vast extent of gold yet in our mountains.
It isa fact that we Californians really
know very little of our own great, and, I
may say, limitless gold mines, and in this
peculiar condition of our finances it surely
behooves every thinking man to promote
this our chief industry. Men who have
Sons growing up should teach them to become miners ; they should enceurage mining schools, and when boys are old enough
and streng enough they should be introduced into the best mining scheol in the
world—that is, in the levels, with drill,
pick and shoyel, under good superintendents, where they could learn te be independent producers, where they can learn a business in which there can be no competition,
where’ they could be more nearly free from
freight monopoly than in any other bnsiness,
where the development of a hundred new
mines does not depreciate the value of the
first one, and where the demand will always
be far in excess of the supply.
Every miner who works for wages should
most cheerfully appropriate at least ene
day’s wages to aid the miners’ exhibit, and
every mine-owner should send samples of
his ores, and we should have.fifty to a hundred tons of good ore sent to be milled by
the splended 5-stamp mill which the Joshua
Hendy Machine Works offered (and is now
building) te erect in the Mechanics’ Arts
building contiguous to our mineral exhibit,
This mill is to be coraplete irem rockbreaker to concentrator, and ore shipped to
this exhibit will be carefully worked and
the result protected and returned to the
owner in gold brick or coin, as may be desired.

A San Francisco Wedding.
Miss Alice Mau, niece of Mra. William
Kohler of Grass Valley, was married at San
Francisco Tuesday evening to Fred H.
. Hood. ‘The residence of the bride’s mother,
Mrs, H. Albert Manu, at 2215 Breadway,
was elaborately decorated for the occasion,
each recom having a special color, In the
drawing room yellow prevailed, and here a
handsome eanopy of yellow chrysanthemums had been erected, under which the
happy couple stood while the marriage
service was read to them. The bride was
attired in a handseme gown of white crystaline trimmed with exquisite deep flouncings of old Duchesse,
Many years age the parents of the bride
resided in this city. A brick building that
stands on upper Commercial street was used
asastore and warehouse by Albert Mau
