How Wright and His Gang Downed “Nevada County's Candidate. . San Francisco, Nov. 22, 1898. £prror Transcript: This is one of those “in-between” letters, as my wife says. My “railroad letter,” is not finished, and the Miners Convention being in session distracted my thoughts. For some time past I have not been well. But then the thought that the “old boys” were in session drew. me to the conclave. It was their afternoon, ‘the second day. marks were made, and on a showing. of planted all the gold that this State had been or was still possessed of. In fact, had he gone still further, and stated that Mr. Benjamin was the possessor of a trasmutation process, by which all things might be turned into the yellow metal—a King Midas, as it were—I should not have n a bit surprised. Your readers knbw that during the progress of the Miners Fair I gave Mr. Benjamin all the credit I thought he deserved, and perhaps more. But I ‘have since been told, whether truthfmlly or not I cannot, say, as I have not investigated the matter, that had Mr. Benjamin taken a firm stand the Fair would have been what it was intended to bea genuine exhibition of ourmineral productions, and not a disgusting fake show. From the first I tried to look at it from its legitimate standpoint, but finally was compelled to recede from the high standard I had erected in my mind. So much for that. Well, a gentleman on my right and in the front row, called Judge Wall-' ing’s bluff. He said that was just what . the Association wanted—more members—and-if Judge Walling could successfully carry out his, threat of in-. creasing the membership it was the duty of every one present to cast his vote for Mr. Benjamin. Some more re-' hands it appeared that Benjamin had four aces and Turner a bob-tail flush —or, in other words, Benjamin had 320 and Turner 249 votes. In the body of the hall Isaw so few I knew that I felt lonesome, and I hurried away as soon as the election was over. Point, the depth of water was less than thirty feet, and was at one point only twentyone feet, enabling a battleship to pass over it only at high tide. The report also stated that in order to obtain thirty feet of water at low tide. through this section a shoal would have to be removed at a cost of $300,000 and it was important—that—this-shoal be—removed in order that Mare Island Navy Yard may be accessible to all vessels “The State Anti-Debris Association resolved to-day that the report was the most cogent evidence that could be presented of.the injuries done by hydraulic mining, not only to the rivers of California and adjacent lands, but also to he bays of San Pablo and San Francisco. The resolutions direct the attention of the California Senators and Congressmen to the fact that: previous surveys showed years ago that the tide waters around San Francisco Bay were affected, and were in danger of permanent destruction for cqgqmmercial purpos es by reason of the filling caused by the I also saw B. It would be inferred from it that bydraulic mining is now in full blast and that the debris is carried into the various streams. Such is not the case. No hydraulic mining is being carried on in this State . whereby such'a result would follow. The Transcript has stated time and time again, basing its remarks on personal observance, that there is already enough debris deposited in the tribu. taries of the various streams to fill up the rivers and even the bay of San Francisco, and that unless some action is taken the above result would follow during a very wet season. If the $500,000 which has been set apart for the building of dams at proper places had been promptly and properly expended the complaint would never have been made. Red-tape is the cause of the present trouble and thousands of dollars will now have to be expended where hundreds would have formerly answered the purpose.
