The. Republican says of the snbject: The railroad company and the Trac kee Lumber company will pay more. . than half the entire taxes of the town if incorporation carries. Both these companies have been interviewed this week and are willingto take chances on paying less taxes than are being paid at. present, ifthe people wish to incorporate. It is a matter which THE TRANSCRIPT. HOSKEN WOULD NOT FIGHT. As Referee, _—_— HAD CONSENTED TO LET HIM. The tides Given to Wheelihan and Most of the Spectators Get Their Dollars Back. The decision in the’ twenty round zbody had a good time. rests solely with the people. ‘The talk of “jobs,” of “exorbitant taxes,” of “shutting up,” this business or that, is merely clap-trap, and only causes bitter feelings. Why can’t men glove-contest advertised to’ take” place . at Armory hall last night between Mike Wheelihan and Obarles Hosken of Grass Valley for $250 a side and a purse hung up by the Nevada County Athbe reasonable? We will all have to letic Club was awarded by the referee live together in the town next week no matter what the result isSaturday, We can differ honestly, we can work earnestly for or against incorporation, .6r in.favor of our friends for office, but ‘let.us do it calmly, clearly, neighborly, . , ‘without malice, bad blood or personal‘ities. If; the town incorporates and the ‘Trustees think they can offer water, gas, electric lights or street cars at such a cost that two-thirds of our. citizens will vote to buy them, that will be something in the future. At present we have only tosay whether we. wish the smallest, least expensive, least dangerous form of municipality known to California law, or whether we prefer to have Nevada county look after us as she has done for the past thirty years. It isn’t a big question, and it is very small business to try, to magnify it by falsehoods, personalities, or landerous’ accusations, Let us have peace whether we pipe lmoonparase or not. THE GRAND PARLOR BENERIT The Native Sons. Give Another Yery Pleasant Party. The dance given at Armory Hall Wednesday evening by Hydraulic Parlor to, raisefunds to go towards entertaining the Grand Parlor next April was a marked success socially, although the attendance was not so large as it should have been considering the purpose in giving it, played some very good music. Floor Director John ©. Nilon, escorting his sister, Miss Alice Nilon, led the grand march. William Caverly, catcher of the Colts baseball club of this city, was the referee and also the bone of contention. The two men were in their corners shortly before nine o’clock. With Mike Wheelihan, who weighed in at 144 pounds, were his brother Matt who acted as his manager, also E. P. Lynch, John McAuliffe, James Wheelihan and Pat Wheelihan. In the corner with Hosken, who tipped the beam at 150 pounds, were James Roach, his manager, and James Rodda and Ed. Dunkley. Rodda on behalf of Hoskin stated that the latter absolutely refused to fight with Oaverly as referee. He cast Some severe aspersions on the latter, and added that if he would step down and make room for any one of a number of well-known and reputable men that were named, his side of the house would be ready to put on the gloves. The Wheelihan contigent said they were perfectly satisfied with the baseball player and insisted upon his acting. Daring this aiden of the proceedings Rodda and Caverly had some talk together when a spectator shouted “Hit him.” Sheriff Getchell got into the ring. and said if the speaker repeated the remark or anybody else made such a demonstration thé offender would be arrested. Time was called by George Davis at Goyne’s. orchestra . nine o’clock sharp. Wheelihan sprang to the center of the ring, ready for action. Hosken did not budge from his chair. Thereupon Referee Caverly without a moment’s hesitation gave the} battle to Wheelihan. Announcement was made that those who had paid to come in would have their money refunded at the box office. There were nearly if not quite 600 men . in the hall, 250 having come on the special train from Grass Valley. Many of these were special deputy sheriffs, marshals, city and township peace officers and newspaper representatives .{ having been taken in at the door, Those , who had paid quickly fell into line and began to draw down their dollar apiece. When the money was all gone there were still some twenty men to be paid and they left the scene bewailing their loss and denouncing everybody connected with the affair. Matt Wheelihan condemns Hosken “His manager, ; James Roach, and I agreed fair and square last Tuesday on Caverly, and there is no denial of it by Mr. Roach. He was the authorized representative of Hosken, as I was of my brother. The simple truth is that Hosken was afraid to fight. He knew he would be whipped, and so he crawled out of the first hole he could find. He must certainly have kuown before coming here that Caverly bad been chosen. He isa yellow cur, and that is all there i is to i¢.*” “I never found a medicine that hit ‘my case like Hood’s Sarsaparilla. It ‘tones up my system, purifies my blood, ' sharpéns, my. appetite and seems to do me good all over.” W. H. Laughlin. -Napa City: ‘Hoop’s Pires: cure indigestion, bilieousness. Hosken said he had on Saturday last, when waking the final deposit on the: $250 bet (the money being supplied by Roach) stated plainly that he would not take his chances with Caverly, and had barred him particularly of a number of available men suggested. He charged that Matt Wheeliban came to the county seat Wednesday to “fix things” with Caverly; that before he came there . was no mouvey being offered that Mike Wheelihan would win, but that as soon ‘as he got back to Grass Valley there was any amount of it im circulation. ‘Re ‘da, Dunkley andI came up here to have a square contest,” he continued, “and we are now satisfied there was a swindling job put up by the other side and by some professing to have faith in my ability to-win.
