The Examiner gives ‘an interesting sketch of Mike Kelly, the youngest of the native California riders. He has made a name for himself in the short space of five years. Mike was born in Grass Valley in 1866, and first took to riding as a,means of livelihood in 1880. He was with J. B. Chase of Frisco for one year, and then went te ride with the Rancho del -Paso stable. In the Spring of 1885, when R. Porter Ashe made his advent on the turf, he selected Kelly as his rider. Since then he has been with him. In 1884 Kelly went East with the Haggin stable and won thirty:three races. Last year he had 295 mounts and rode sixty-two winners. While in the East. his style was so pleasing that he was engaged to ride for Baldwin, Corrigan and Swaggert, besides_other-celebrities of the turf. On Modesty he won the St. Louis Cup last year, the Sheridan stakes at Chicago on Alta, and also the Quickstep and Kenwood stakes at Chicago, on the King of . Norfolk. —-Although--a-comparatively new hand at the business, Kelly is looked upon as one of the most promising of modern riders, and certainly his performance, in the past both on this coast and in the East, warrant the assertion
that this ven ture is not far from being right. Kelly rides: at 100 pounds. Gene to Farming. The Auburn Argus says: ‘‘Jas. B.
