SENATOR ?
a
Whose Name Will Be the One
Chosen ?
Post: A United States Senator is to be
elected by the next Legislature to fill the
unexpired term of the late Senator Stanford.
As the Legislature is overwhelmingly Re.publican the choice will fall to a member of
that party. At present two candidates arc
in the field, George C. Perkins and M. H.
de Young. The former seems the natural
choice of the Legislature, as he now holds
. the position through virtue of appointment
by Governor Markham. During the past
campaign he stumped California from north
tosouth. He spoke to the people of the
State and claims that-his-candidacy was involved and that the selection of a Republican Legislature is expressive of the’ wish of
the people that he be elected to complete
the term ‘in the Senate, 5
While all the members of the Legislature
admit’ that Mr. Perkins is an able man, and
has proved a@ conscientious and honest Senator, there is a division among the Republican members regarding his availability. A
powerful faction is preparing to fight him on
the ground that he is not strong enough and
that his influence at Washington is very
limited. While it is. admitted that his
motives are most conimendable, they argue
that he is too weak to secure législation
which will be of value to the State.
Opposition to Mr Perkins has also spruug
from-an unexpected source. An evening
paper, which it was supposed would support him; has stated that **he-is not the material out of which Senators should be
made,” and pointedly remarks that his railroad affiliations are too strong, and that he
would ‘‘fall down” on the Reilly bill.
After Mr. Perkins comes M. H. de
Young, who may have the support, of the
railroad. When that gentleman was supposed to be Governor Markham’s choice for
the appointment it was supposed that the.
Yailroad had influenced the appointing
power, . but Col. Fred Crocker declared
azainst him, and did all he ¢ould to prevent
him from gaining the position.
Since then it is said that a truce has been
patched up between them, and that De
Young is ‘‘fancied’”’ for the place. At any
rate, Col. Crocker will not be on hand to
oppose him, as he has taken a trip abread.
“Tapdstares eee ro aa ge Gene
learned.that they favor neither Perkins nor
De Young, but would like to see some new
and able man jump into the tight. They.
are all footloose, having been tied down to
no candidate during the campaign.
Reports from different parts of the State
indicate that a similar sentiment prevails
to some extent. The trouble is, however,
that the man of the hour is not at hand.
Whether or not he will develop. between
now and the meeting of the Legislature remains to be seen.
Prominent Democrats are still trying to
figure out who wil] be given the best places
in the event that James H. Budd is finally
declared elected Governor. :
As was published afew days ago a hot
fight is in, progress for Harbor Commiesioner. Chairman Gould of the State Central Committee, Ed Colnan of the Stockton
Mail and H. F. Emeric are said to be the
leading candidates. Others havea longing
for the place, but have not yet come prominently te the front.
It is said that Mr. Budd has harrowed
the feelings of Chairman Gould by telling
h'm bluntly that he can’t have the jub.
Ed Colnan’s friends are very much pleased.
as it is generally conceded that the Stockton publicist is entitled to some reward for
his faithful party services.
Mr. Emeric is Mr. Budd’s closest friend
and those on the inside declare that all he
has to do is to announce that he wishes the
place in order to secure it.
George Ross, the shipwright, has convinced Mr, Budd that he turned the entire
water-front vote oyer to bim and, in cunsequence Ross wil] be made a Port Warden.
The billet is an easy one, and in these dull
times is good for $250 a month. When
shipping business is lively it runs up to
thrice that sum.

Eack Bank of Engiand Lock Costs $375
and Has 36@,880 Different Combinations.
Elaborate Mechanism to Protect Treasure
Vaults.
There is no denying the fact that the
burglar of today, who aims at high
game, displays ‘amazing ingenuity in
thexmanufacture of scientific tools and
}apparéias and also in the practical working of the same. ;
But he is completely out of the running. when.pitted against our safemak
ers and locksmiths, even though he periOdically buys their wares for experimental purposes. :
While the present writer was being
‘personally conducted’’ over the premises of the greatest firm of lockmakers
in the world ‘he acquired much interesting information concerning those wondrous pieces of mechanism which protect the vast riches of palaces, banks
and strongrooms, andwhich render it
absolutely impossible for thieves to
break in.
Perhaps the most interesting department was .that one in which an exhibition of the highest form of the burglar’s
craft Was being given. Skilled workmen
were seated: before locked safes and
were using the almost irresistible fusing
apparatus on the door in order to reach
the locks or were forcing ganpowder
throngh the keyholes by meanmof a tiny
pair of bellows. :
Others were squirting corrosive chemicals into ‘the locks and noting the effect, while sturdy artisans were using
the drill and the wedge with a scientific
force and skili-that showed they could
be dangerous enemies to society if they
were criminally inclined. oo
The fusing apparatus consists of a
cylinder of compressed oxygen gas,
which supplies a short section of pipe
terminating in an iron cup. The latter
is pressed firmly against the door after
a light has been applied, ‘and a stream
of flame isspes from the end of the pipe
jn its bottom. So fierce is this flame
that it melts the metal in the safe door
and eats a jagged hole through it in a
remarkably short ‘space of time.
‘*We turn out about 288, 000 locks every yoar,’’ remarked the inanager of the
works, ‘‘and they range in weight from
a quarter of an ounce—including key—
to 228 pounds, the respective values of
500.
’ “Foremost among those locks which
protect enormous wealth come. those on
the treasury doors of the Bank of England. The making of each of these mar
vels of mechanisin occupies three mep
for six weeks and costs &374. :
“Those little fluted pieces of steel in
the head of the key—technically called
‘steps’ —are nine in number and are capable of 362,880 different combinations,
‘If a banker whose safe was fitted
with this lock chanced to lose his key, or
if he had reason to suppose that a wax
impression of it had been made, all
that would be necessary in order to baffle burglarious designs would be to un
lock the safe with the duplicate key,
anscrew the head and change the position of thie steps und then relook the safe
or strongroom.
sue mecnuuism or we 100k would
instantly adapt itself to the changed
combination and could never be unlocked by the former key.
‘*This, however, is not an unmixed
blessing. One afternoon a certain city
merchant was amusing himself by unscrewing the steps of both his keys
when it suddenly occurred to him that
he had forgotten the combination,
‘*As the keys in question were capable of thousands of combinations, there
was nothing for it but to set to work on:
a system of numbered tables and tick
off each combination as it were tried.
‘**But that may take months,’ objected the merchant, ruefully. Well, as
the only other alternative was to build
a furnace round the door of the safe it
was decided to try the combination first.
‘*We sent two men and an apprentice
with the printed tables—great sheets of
paper several yards long—andeafter nine
days’ labor, during which about 18,000
different combinations were arranged
and tried, the right one was hit upon by
accident, and the door opened. Needless
to say, there was a pretty big bill
against the customer who .gave us all
this trouble.
“The treasury doors at the Bank of
England measure 7 feet 8 and weigh
about 2'¢ tons. Besides being fitted
with the above mentioned changeable
locks they have violence locks 5 feet
long, each of which weighs 200 pounds, and gunpowder proof locks, having
blowholes on every side, even through
the massive bolt. These blow holes allow the gunpowder pumped in to escape
and reduce the force of a possible explosion to a mere harmless puff.
“It is worthy of note that there are
more than 10,000 locks fitted in the
Bank of England, ‘hen comes the Sa
voy hotel with 1,860, controlled by one
master key. The manager of each of the
six floors at the Savoy, however, has a
master key which controls the lock of
every room under his supervisfon.
‘Her majesty.s safe at Windsor castle in which the gold plate is kept
weighs eight tons and is protected by
& yiolence lock 18 inches long, a changeable lock and a gunpowder lock, all of
which can be mechanically covered by
an undrillable steel plate, which renders it impossible to insert even a hairpin into any of the keyholes. ""—London

The Best Medicine.
J. O, Witson, Contractor and

thus speaks of Ayer’s Pills:
,“ Ayer’s Pills are the best medicine I
ever tried; and, in my judgment, no
better general remedy could be devised.
I have used them in my family and
recommended them to my friends and
employes for more than twenty years.
To my certain knowledge, many cases
of the following complaints have been
completely and
Permanently Cured
by the use of Ayer’s Pills alone: Third
day chills, dumb ague, bilious fever,
sick headache, rheumatism, flux, dyspepsia, constipation; and hard colds. I
know that a moderate use of Ayer’s
Pills, continued for a few days or weeks,
_as.the nature of the complaint required;
would be found an absolute cure for the
disorders T have named above.”
“T have been sélling medicine for
eight years, and I can safely say that
Ayer’s Pills give better satisfaction
than any other Pill I ever sold.”—J. J.
