TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1893. ICE AND LUMBER. — ’ Outlook For Those Industries In Eastern Nevada County. Fioriston, Cal., Nov. 25th, 1893. What has every indication of the first storm of the season was ushered in with a warm rain that began to fall early this morning and turned to snow aboat 10 o’vlock. The ice ponds have been elosed over with ice from two inches in thickness up to 7 inches on the mountain ponds, it being much colder along the streams tributary to the Truckee than on the main river channel. The Ice men are all sluicing out -their ponds which is giving employment te some 50 to 60 extra men. = About all the saw mills have closed down for the season along the river. lt is currently reported that Hamlin’s saw mill is to be removed up the river about three miles e@pposite Camp 24 into California where he contemplates logging on the east. bank of the river by drivers. His saw mill will be below the timber at a point where it appears he will be able to handle the timber without much expense. The National Ice Co, have completed the excavation and the dams on their ponds, which now gives them several acres of surface or enough te fill their house by one cutting. It is generally reported around here that the Union and National Ice Ce.’s have come to a compromise. , Just what the cenditions are is not known. It is said the “National takes 40 per cent of the profits and the Union the balance. Thus ends what has been the longest and most expensive contest the Union Ice Company have experienced, Three years ago the National was started by Mr. S. H. Simonds and one or two of the eld Union Ice men with outside capital. The enterprise was fought from the first. It is generally said that beth Companies have been hostile towards each other so far-as to reduce the price of ice to ridiculously low prices, each striving to get all the business regardless of cost. The Union levied an assessment of $5, so it is reported, while the National threw a number of shares of their, reserve on the market. I have been infermed that the Tahoe Ice Company will not make any effort to filP their houses this season. This company has been one of the stumbling blocks towards the compromise so, says dame rumor. If the report be true that they will not harvest any ice it certainly looks as though the compromise has heen perfected. The lumber yard at this place which had so many reverses by ,bad management and which was attached py Mesars. Lonkey & Simonds has come to a settlement. Tliose \bwo are to wind up the business, having ‘been given a bill of sale of the lumber and personal property and realty by W. H. Smith, : : The Railroad Company have laid some new 76 lb. steel rails on the reverse curve just east of here. It is said the company contemplate replacing all the 60 lb., steel cast of Truckee dowo the mountain in the Spring, with new 76 . b. steel. x. : ‘Bald Heads!) e of your nm be wi . vaave mann Registered > THE SKOOKUM ROOT HAIR GROWER CO., 3 1 67 South Fifth Ave., Now York, W. STREET, «SITE YORK STREE1, Give me a eall before your work elsewhere, LOCALS. IN BRIEF, Summarized Mention of Minor Home Happenings. Smith, the grecer, expects to move to his Broad-street building in about two weeks. The prisoners at the county jail are happy, because the weather will not permit working on the roads, Arrangements are being made té start up ‘the Eagle Bird mine at Washington on a more extensive scale than ever, Charles Gray. has bought out W. P. Sigourney’s interest in the fruit and variety store on Commercial street, and is new sole proprietor. Mrs. N. Wichman, mother of Miss Wichman, the North Bloemfield echoolteacher, died Sunday night at her home ear North San Juan, ; The boycott against the malicious San Francisco sheet referred to the other day is spreading all over the State, If decent peeple would refuse te buy or even read it, it would soon suspagd publication. 0460 More Crossings Necessary. The streets are getting soft, and that softness gives emphasis to the fact that there is urgent need formore crossings in the business’ part of the town. The city has had stoneccrossings put down at all the corners, but does not intend tohave any put down at other places. Several crosswalks are contemplated on Commercial street, the great thoroughfare uf the*town. These will be paid for by private parties. WiLson, Contractor and Builder, Sulphur Springs, Texas, thus speaks of Ayer’s Pills: “ Ayer’s Pills are the best medicine I ever tried; and, in my judgment, no better general remedy-could be devised. I have used them in my family and recommended them to my friends and employes for more than twenty years. To my-certain knowledge, many cases of the foHowing complaints have been completely and Permanently Cured by the use of Ayer’s Pills alone: Third day chills, dumb ague, bilious fever, sick headache, rheumatism, flux, dyspepsia, constipation, and hard colds. I know that a moderate use of Ayer’s Pills, continued for a few days or weeks, as the nature of the complaint required, would be found an absolute eure for the disorders I have named above.” “TI have been selling medicine for eight years, and I can safely say that Ayer’s Pills give better satisfaction than any other Pill I ever sold,.”’—J.
