The report that Mart ha Hughes Cannon who ran for the office of State Senator against her husband in Utah,. in that line of goods, produce or maand beat him 4,000 votes ,is clouded by a new explanation. Mrs. Cannon is not legally the wife of her reputed husband, if the law against polygamy is to haveany force. The Cannon man married two sisters; and when. the law required him to confine his relation to one wife he refused. But he even’ went further and married two other women in the face of the law forbidding plural marriages. The last and fourth wife is the Martha Hughes Cannon who ran against the fourth part of her reputed . t husband, or’ whatever interest she, claimed in him, and beat him. The victorious woman is a polygamist. and woman suffragist, and claims far greater rights than are conceeded to most women, and greater than are accorded to her by law. Strictly speaking, she did not run against a husband, nor even the fourth part of one. The political romance disappears under this explanation; and leaves only the residum of a polygamist woman elected as a law maker of Utah. : —_—_—__—_ + Se i Christmas at the Grimes’ Emporium. As in former years this season’s array of Christmas and holiday goods at Grimes’ Clothing Emporium will be of the top-notch order. An inspection of the immense stock will readily show that. Purchased in the markets of the country where the masses set the fashions itis an ideal stock to make selections from. Suitable articles for OCbristmas gifts may be had at establishment. and at — special holiday prices. Itis a well-known fact that goods turned out by this firm pass inspection anywhere. Their adyertisement will be seen in the TRANNSCRIPT. McClure’s Magazine. McClure’s Magazine for December will contain an account of Nansen’s hard adventures in getting 195 miles . nearer the North Pole than any other _ explorer. In the same magazine Ian . Maclaren will have a Drumtochty ' Christmas story and Rudyard Kipling . will contribute a short story of a Scotch engineer and his adventures ' atsea: There will also bea paper on . the boyhood of Gaant by Hamlin Gar© land, presenting it is promised many new reminiscences and anecdotes and / much new information. Iam in no quan' dary, however, in regard to where I ‘intend to buy my groceries. I have fully made up my mind to trade at Gaylord’s as he always has the best and freshest goods. The Difference. An old soldier who strayed away from the Yountville home and suffered from exposure was pronounced sane in Oakland. Had he killed some person his chances for commission to an asylum . would probably have been improved. As he committed no crime he will probably have to continue to suffer. An Ear: y-Day Desperado. A human skeleton was washed’ out of the ground the other day in @ mining claim at Black’s ranch, near Rough -and Ready. From the fact that there were two bullet holes in the skull, the old residents say the remains are those of a desperado who was killed there in early days. . The Marysville Democrat. has the following pertinent remarks upon a subject applicable locally to every Tn every cfty and town wherever we g0 is to be found the best hotel, the tailor and men of means: who contribute to the prosperity of the place. The tradesmen, marketmen and every branch of industry are noticed in proportion to merit or notoriety given . through ‘the process; of advertising. When a stranger visits a town the first inquiry by such person. is for the best hotel and if in need of articles to . be had in such a market the second inquiry will be for the leading dealer terials. The people residing near to our city depend almost entirely on the local journals as their guide when seeking @ place to make a purchase of any importance. The reading people of the . leading merchants, most fashionable'. dome of the Amendments That the Legislature Will Be-Ashed: to, Make. ~ The State-Convention of County Assessors, which met at Sacramento this . week, has adjourned after being in ses. sion three days. The last work was to . adopt a report from the Revision Committee, in which is contained the recommendations which will be made to the Legislature; The report was referred to the Legislation Committee with instructions to confer with the . Code Commissioners relative to the . same and then to have copies printed . and mailed to every Assessor-in the State. It was further instructed to present matters to the next Legislatue. Some of the amendments proposed are as follows: ieee Amend section 3653, so as to make County Assessors furnish City Assessors with a copy of assessment’ book, and make charge of 10 cents, instead of 5,excluding printed headlines. Aménd section. 3658, to.provide for preparation of maps and plats under country have become educated to the fact that the live business men of a . city or town invest money in printer’ s ink quite extensively and they kriow . that.merchants would not.dothis if . it did not .pay them. When we visit . the stores and places of business that . . are well advertised, it*is plain to be . seen that such concérns are busy when others complain of dull times and _little‘trade. If we ask these dealers why they expend large sums of money for space in the local journals they will Simply answer that it is reciprocity in trade, the exchange of money for trade, which.trade brings to them a greater return than.the expenditure. It ls of this class of citizens that we at this time desire to speak, because of the day and the thought that they are particularly deserving of thanks. This class of live business . men are the electrical force that has given an impetns to trade during the dull. times. through which we have passed, and to whom the people of such towns are indebted for the good name snch places bear today throughout the land. The question of reciprocity in our home trade should be considered at all times when distributing patronage and every person should remember that to senda dollar away to make} purchases when such articles can be had at home is against their own interests, even though they personally save a few cents. —— -— -— + e@e > A New Mining Tool. A new tool for mining use has been brought out in England. It is in its primary conception a pick, but it can be converted ‘readily into a variety of other tools that are formed for use on the end of a wooden shaft. The head is simply'a T-shaped forging of three sockets, one for the fixed shaft and the other two for pick points: or tools of other shapes, such as a rammer, an adz, an ax ora hammer. By using one point only a miner can work in a more confined situation ‘than with an ordinary double-ended pick. The points are easily fixed and released, and it is claimed that they strike a more solid blow than a common pick, without tingling the fingers, It has several other advantages, one of which is that it has a pick point of a quality of steel that cannot be forged on an ordinary pick head. ‘There is also economy in respect of renewals, for one and the same pick head will serve for many sets of points. . Se al The Airship at Grass Valley. Three residents of Grass Valley are confident that they saw the airship hovering over that town a few nights ago. They say they could distinguish its shape and see the lights. Thus far the strange craft has not been seen at Nevada City. There must be a difference in the glasses used by: the people of each town.
