GROVE'S TASTELESS CHILL TONIC for Malaria, Chills and Fever. It is simply Iron and Quinine in a tasteless form ‘Children love it. Aduits prefer it to bitter, nauseating Tonics, Price 2cents. * ~ PRG EOL RE THE TRANSCRIPT. Established Sept. 6, 1860. by Nat. P. Brown & Co. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA ©O., CALIFORNIA _ Proprietors BROWN & CALKINS. They Couldn’t Sell the Things; Couldn't = aoe aiaps _ Give Them Away and Were Not PermitMUNDAY.. ... 2.. NOV. 29, 1897. ted to Lose Them—Finally Smith Thought SHOES CAME BACK. HOW MR. AND MRS. ALGERNON SMITH DISPOSED OF A NUISANCE. THE ANNEXATION PROBLEM. The annexation of the Hawaiian Islands is calling forth many expressions of approval and disapproval of the scheme. Senator Perkins states that while he is opposed to annexation, yet he shall vote in favor of it because all tle “great” papers except one are in favor of it. He reasons that this being the case, the sentiment of the people favors annexation, and if he does not feel like carrying out their wishes he sbould resign his office. Wethink the ‘Senator is laboring under a delusion. The “great” papers that he refers todo not in one case out of fifty express the To get a fair expression, if the newspapers are to be his guide, he should look to those published in various parts of the State, where no undue influences of any kind are brought to bear upon them. It is generally to the press outside of the large cities that one must turn for free and unbiased utterances. If, the Senator should take the “great” papers for bis guide in all matters that come up in Congress he would find that he is on the wrong track many times. He evidently, for want of time and because he does not receive all of the papers sentiments of the people. of the State, has come to an erroneous conclusion so far as the annexation scheme is concerned. To give an offhand opinion, we should say that if a ull expression was given by the press of the State, whicb has not occurred up to this writing, it would be about an even thing, and further, that a majority of that class of people whose opinions are worth anything upon such a subject, are opposed to annexation. The ‘TRanscipT desires to beclassed as most emphatically opposed to annexatior and sincerely believes that most of the people of this sectien who have considered the matter.are in unison with it. Senator Perkins isa man of clear head and cool judgment, and he can be depended upon to fairly and intelligently represent his constituents in this matter as he'has in all others that have come before him during his legislative career. I offered them to @ tranzp, and he said when he went into the shoe business he would let’me know—he wasn’t buying misfits yet.”’ “I like his impudence. Where are they? I'll make short work of them,” said Mr. Smith, and he took’ the big bundle his wife gave him and went out In 15 minutes he was back. “So you got rid of them,” said his wife joyfully ‘I think there was an accumulation of six years in that lot Some of them I had given to peopl]: who were begging at the door, but I al. ways found them again nex¢ day in the lot. About midnight a loud rapping was heard at the frdnt door, and a light in the basement was hastily extinguished. Mr. Smith answered the summons, while Mrs. Smith . hid in the coal cellar.
