la Suerta Works
Totaly Wrecked.
Last Weinesday evening two explosions occurred at the Le Suerte
mine, im the Indian Fiat district, and
the modern hoisting plant was destroyed. Several hundred pounds of
powder and a quantity of caps that
were stored in the hoisting works
exploded, sparks from the smokestack having set fire tothe structure.
The burning embers fell on the roof,
and it was but a short time before the
upper part of the buil iing was ablaze.
Superictendent W. W. Kirkham ‘made
no avail. Seeing that the structure

discharge of the powder, which was
stored in the pump pit.
By this time the burning embers
were falling around the powder, which
was packed in boxes, and after a little
Mr. Kirkham saw that the only thing
He had gone but a short distance
when the giant caps exploded. In
a short time the powder went off,
throwing what: remained of the hoisting works in every direction. At the
home. of Oharlea Cleveland, about
halfa mile away, dishee and other articles were thrown from their position.
Mr. Kirkham hed a narrow escape, and

pened to be sheltered by some trees
he would undoubtedly have been
killed, He was knocked down, but instantly regained his feet. A
As seon ae he could, Superintendent Kirkham made hie way to the
drain tunnel to inform Henry Fowler
and Those. Hudelson, who were at work
im an upraise some distance from the
main shaft, which ie dowm 350 feet.
The miners, however, reslized that
something unusual had occurred and
they sterted for the surface. When
they got to the main shift the water
was coming down in torrents, the pipe
having been broken. To reach the
drain tunnel, about 150 feet above,
the two miners had to take desperate
chances on account of the large rocks
which were falling. They succeeded
in reaching the drain tunnel unhurt,
however, and found that the air pipe
hed alec bursted. They hastened
along the drain tunnel, and on nearing
the end of it met Superintedent Kirkham and Charles Oleveland, the latter
having burried tothe scene from his
home. Pid
In the meantime the flames spread
rapidly, and the mill about fifty yards
from the hoisting works, wae in imminent danger of destruction. It was
saved after much labor on the pait of
Mr, Kirkham and others.
The Superintendent’s home is not
far from the miae, and Mrs. Kirkham telephoned the news of the disaster to E. A. Moore, of this city, right
away. Mr. Moore reported the word
he received and lost no time in getting
out to the mine.
The loss is estimated at $10,0C0, which
is covered by insurance.
