TRLBPHONE No. 4. WEDNESDAY. .,..,.NOV. 3, 1897. SAFETY IN BLASTING. A Miner Invents a Simple and Effective Plan. A new method of shot firing in mines has been evolved by a working miner, consisting of a hollow brass or copper needle, to be inserted in the cartridge containing the charge. The shot is rammed in the usual way, but the detonator is not inserted in the charge until the stemming is completed. By means of a thin copper rod, tipped with bard paper, the detonator is passed up the hollow needle and placed in the cured by aspring. Should a detonator prove defective and the shot fail to explode, it is stated that the faulty detonator can be withdrawn and another substituted. By the employment of this device it is claimed thatthe element of danger is almost entirely removed, for no second hole where a . text book, It is unbiased and. unprejA MATTER OF OPINION. A Trockes Editor-Teacher Says Meyer's Book Is All Right. Mr. Ratherford, formerly a teacher in the schools. of this city and now principal. of the public schools at Truckee and editor of the Republican of that town, says in his paper of Saturday: , “An objection to the use of Meyer’s Medieval History in the high school has been*made in Nevada City and the matter is now in the hands of the classification committee of the board of school trastees. The history referred to above contains an authentic record of the events, and the manners and ages, written in a style that is interesting and attractive, giving it much merit as a literary production as well asa udiced, and the author does nothing except to set forth the facts as they existed. Those who want the facts as they existed in those days and study history for history will cling to Meyer’s book. Bell, a highly esteemed minister residing in Weedsport, Cayuga county, N. Y.,ina recent letter writes as foliows: “There has uever been anything that I have taken that has relieved the Dyspepsia from which I have suffered for ten years except the} new remedy called stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets. Since takipg them I have had no distress at all after eating and in after long years CAN SLEEP WELL.” —Rev. F. EL Bell, Weedsport, N. Y., formerly Idalia, Colo. ‘ Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets is a remarkable remedy, not only because it is a certain cure for all kinds of indigestion,-but because it seems to act as thoroughly in oid chronic cases of Dys-pepsia as well as in mild attacks of indigestion or biliousness. A person snas Dyspepsia simply because the -stemach is overworked, all it wants is 2 harmless, vegetable remedy to digest the foed and thus give it the much mevded rest. This is the secret of the success of this peculiar remedy. No matter how weak or how disordered the digestion mey be, Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets will digest the food whether the stomach works or not. New life and energy is given not only to the stomach but to every organ and nerve in the body. A trial of this wonderful medicine will convince. the most skeptical that Dyspepsia and all stomach troubles can be cured. ~ ‘The tablets are prepared by the Stuart Ohemical Co, of Marshall, Mich., but so popular has the remedy become that Siuart’s. Mr. Hiatt, the principal of our high school, is a Protestant, and he says the criticism is warranted. On the other hand some of the Catholic students of the class favor the continued* use of the work, maintaining that the objections to it are not justified. In the meantime the matter is in the hands of the classification committee. It is stated unofficially that in order to preserve harmony in the school district and to avoid the accusation, whether just or not, of having the schools tinged in the slightest degree with sectarianism, the Meyer history will be dropped for some other publication of equal literary merit that will be acceptable to all creeds. James Bottomley of You Bet, who is one of the “youngest old men” of the county. He was born in Market Harborongh, England, January 17, 1815. He came to the United States and settled-in Connecticut in 1837. In 1849 he came around the Horn to California and lived 10 years in Timbuctoo, ‘and in 1868 he came into Nevada county. His early days in California were spent in gravel mining. Coming to the United States when Van Buren .was President, casting his first vote for James K. Polk, his memory being well preserved, he narrates many facts brought out in the change vocation of the Protective tariff system. He talks of the world’s history like a walking enclyclopedia. He speaks of started for Brazil as though it happened yesterday. Mr. Bottomley walks with firm step; he speaks English with grammatical presision and from a plentiful vocabulary of choicest language. His hair is bushy and dark gray. His eyés have a bright luster and are keen. His dress is neat, natty and nice, and his white standing collar fashioned after the old school of the Henry Clay type surrounded by a black heavy silk tie as of the days of. old, remind one of the gentleman of the period long passed away. Mr. Bottomley leaves the impression upon his listeners that he will live many years. He is well preserved, to use a common phrase, and his genteel manners and powers of speech together with his store of knowledge cause one to admire the octogénarjan. Sete Baseball Tips.
